Laptop Power Management - Not Available
I installed 8.1 in my inspiron 5000 and I get a little icon which looks like a battery with a red "X" in top of it. It says that Power Managemet tools are not available. The first time I installed I choose the "install" option from the menu, after that I installed it again with the "install acpi". Am I missing something? You need to use APM not ACPI, Dell Bioses don't work with ACPI. -- _ _ __ _____ _____ ___| |_ | '__| / __\ \ /\ / / _ \/ _ \ __| -o) | | _ \__ \\ V V / __/ __/ |_ /\\ |_|(_) |___/ \_/\_/ \___|\___|\__|_\_v rsweet@garagenetworks.net "unix soit qui mal y pense."
You may have to upgrade your bios from the Dell website. It is quite easy. Just enter your service tag, it will give you all upgrades and patches including the bios. Art Robert Sweet wrote:

Well you have to decide which type of powermanagement you want to use. apm or acpi When you decide on acpi .. than maybe an BIOS-upgrade would be needed. Check the sdb because they have some articles about this Fab

I got the same thing when I upgraded to 8.1 on my Satellite. Try adding acpi=off to the boot parameters. sjb

Same thing happened to me when I installed in on my T20 and T23. This is not windows that you constantly have to reinstall. Why don't you just say: acpi=off apm=on, in your grub menu.lst and if you didn't install apmd just run the yast2 module and choose install software. ACPI in 2.4 kernels leaves much to be desired. I rather run APM on 2.4. -- Peace can only come as a natural consequence of universal enlightenment. -Dr. Nikola Tesla
