[SLE] no flame just information
OK, I'm not looking for a flame I just need some information. A friend of mine that is an ISP is swithching from Redhat to another distro. of linux. I of course recomended suse for his next release. He was also looking into using frebsd. Since I have never used frebsd, I would like to get a lot if input on how it compare to suse. Is it better or worse, more or less stable, etc. Hard to configure or worth the configuration? Thanks in advance for this info, Robert -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
IMHO, for speed and load, go for FreeBSD. The code is optimize for intel architecture. For security paranoia, go for OpenBSD. This OS is design with security from ground zero. And as for availability of support, drivers, etc, nothing beats Linux. Cheers, Wayne Robert Lyons wrote:

Well I have a freebsd server, and SuSE on my desktop, Its meant to be very stable, I don't think its hard to configure, but I'm no expert on any of that stuff. One nice thing is the ports system - you want something added to your server - eg python - you just go to the appropriate ports directory type make install , it downloads all the right stuff and installs it. You can remove it that way too. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

I have used FreeBSD as both desktop and server. I would not advise anyone to use it if they have UDMA66 drives and SMP. I use SuSE6.3 on my workstation and FreeBSD as a server. That being said I would not use Linux as a server if FBSD would do the job. I would go with 3.4 release not 4.0. Too many problems with 4.0 right now. Support for new sound cards is lacking- but who needs a sound card in a server? Support is available on their mailing lists and is very good if you RTFM first and "abide by their rules". See www.lemis.com for an explaination . He wrote the book, BTW. My ISP changed from Linux to FBSD for speed and load capability. From my experience and their testing it is better on both accounts. Feel free to contact me if I can answer any other questions. -- Bob F EMail FBob@wt.net A Truly Wise Man Never Plays Leapfrog With A Unicorn... -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

Why frebsd on the server , why not suse linux ??

Have you thought about looking at OpenBSD, it is also free, but it has more integrated encription. FreeBSD and OpenBSD are very much alike, but I have found a few things I like slightly better in OpenBSD. Just a suggestion. Austin Morgan Samy Elashmawy wrote:

I installed 3.4 "just for kicks" and found in some ways the install was
easier w/FreeBSD
than SuSE. The partioning is different but unless you have special needs
the installer will
do it for you. Setting up the networking was a little smoother the SuSE,
but the list of packages in the ports collection lack good descriptions (you
have to know what you
are looking for). The big difference is in the utils like YAST and SAX, I
really missed them. Also the default root shell is not bash (sh I think)
and that threw me for a small loop.
