Has anyone been able to get Amarok to play anything at all. If you have please tell me how. I've been trying all day on 3 different systems using 9.1 and 9.2 to get Amarok to play a stream, any stream. I've read the handbook but I can't get Amarok to work at all. I know it's not good form to complain but what makes this really frustrating is that I pointed my safari browser on my Mac at http:// yp.shoutcast.com this morning and it's been playing all day! Xmms shows itself pre-buffering and connecting over and over again but it doesn't play anything. These two programs should play streams in a straight forward way. They don't for me. If they do for you please let my know how??? Thanks, Jerome

Thanks, Jerome Dunno about streams, I use streamtuner for that usually .. tho I haven't loaded it on my current 9.2 box I can't imagine it wouldn't work okay. As for AmaroK it's playing a bunch of mp3s at this moment... Later I'll try some oggs..

Actually the amarok rpm for 9.2 is broken and does not play streams. I made an rpm that does play streams but I couldn't get the visualisations to compile: http://mywebpages.comcast.net/brana7/rpms/amarok-1.1.1-SuSE9.2.i686.rpm If you don't need visualisations this should do it for you. Brana

SuSE has already provided the updated RPMS on their mirrors for amarok which work just fine for streaming. It is true, the version provided in 9.2 is broken for such things, I stayed after the amarok developers for several days about the streaming problem in IRC. I suspect many others did too. ;o) ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/ftp.suse.com/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.2/ regards, Lee -- --- KMail v1.7.1 --- SuSE Linux Pro v9.2 --- Registered Linux User #225206 "Don't let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game!"

Thanks. Why doesn't this show up on YOU? I have been updating regularly and I didn't see amarok listed. Brana

Because it is not a security update. YOU gets required updates only, I don't believe it's suppose to grab all the KDE updates, which are termed "experimental" usually and only up to the user's discretion to install. Well, you can't blame 9.2 for that one! It was a bug in the program, Amarok, which has been there for several versions now. It's a good program and there was a lot of chatter on the IRC about that bug, but I guess the developers felt other things took precedence over it. :o) Lee -- --- KMail v1.7.1 --- SuSE Linux Pro v9.2 --- Registered Linux User #225206 "Don't let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game!"

Humph - I've got to find someone to blame! (o: Seriously, though, someone made the decision to point Konqueror at AmaroK instead of XMMS for that type of file. XMMS works and AmaroK (as supplied in 9.2) doesn't. Therefore, you "upgrade" to 9.2 and streamed audio no longer works.

So whoever decided it should be used instead of XMMS in 9.2 ought to have known about it, and needs their wrists slapped then! Then the decision was most likely made by the KDE people. Much of the complaints about SuSE 9.2 seem to be complaints about the new kernel or the upgraded KDE that gets installed. jalal -- GPG fingerprint = 3D45 5509 D380 26A4 523E A9D8 A66A 5F38 CA43 BB0E

Ok I'm running 9.2. I updated KDE and then loaded amarok-1.1.1-5. Now when I use Konqueror to open yp.shoutcast.com and pick a station to play Konqueror uses RealPlayer 10 to play it, not Amarok. Under the File menu RealPlayer 10 shows the playlist played like this: 9306.0.shoutcast-playlist.pls. When I add this url 'yp.shoutcast.com' in the 'add media' text window of Amarok I get this stdoutput: yp.shoutcast.com (?). When I use the url: yp.shoutcast.com/9306.0.shoutcast-playlist.pls, Amarok says 'the playlist yp.shoutcast.com/9306.0.shoutcast-playlist.pls could not be downloaded'. I still haven't been able to play a stream with Amarok. What am I missing here? Also the configure dialogue for Konqueror doesn't allow me to pick which application to use to play a stream. Where is this option set? Thanks, Jerome

I tired playing this stream and I couldn't either. Since I can play other streams without problem this might be an issue with the url not amarok.
Also the configure dialogue for Konqueror doesn't allow me to pick which application to use to play a stream. Where is this option set?
Settings->Configure Konqueror->File Associations Select x-scpls and add amarok as a player application if it's not there already and get it to the top of the list so that it starts first. Try clicking on the stream after this. It has happend to me that konqueror sometimes ignored this sorting and started a different application than the first one I selected there, it just wouldn't allow the one I picked to be on top. In that case you can just remove all other applications from the list and leave only amarok. Brana

I'm stunned that you can listen to shoutcast all day on your mac. I alalong thought that there was something wrong with SC. I cannot connect to 98 % of the stations, used to but not anymore. And when I'm connected it plays ( through XMMS ) for 15-20 seconds and then it stops. It's not buffering but it just goes dead. I must say it does that in Kaffeine as well.
Xmms shows itself pre-buffering and connecting over and over again but it doesn't play anything.
Sometimes this happens as well , It's very frustrating, after all Multimedia is one of the ( my) main reason to have a computer. I'm using 9.1 -- Greetings from /bill at 169 west , 19 south. Disclaimer: Any errors in spelling, tact, or fact are transmission errors."

As far as shoutcast on the Mac goes I'm using MacOS 10.3.6 and my Safari, Camino and Opera browsers and iTunes (I just checked). I'm also connected on my 9.1 system through XMMs which was called when I choose a station using Konqueror. It doesn't go dead.
