Thank you. I'd looked at that but could not find any cross-reference to the G04, G05 of G06 series. My problem begins with the opensuse SDB Wiki which says this: G03 = driver v340 = legacy driver for GT8xxx/9xxx devices (via a community user) G04 = driver v390 = legacy driver for GTX4xx/5xx Fermi devices G05 = driver v470 = driver for GeForce 600 series and GeForce 700 series (Kepler) G06 = driver v545 = driver for GeForce 700 series (Maxwell, Pascal...) and up ...... which doesn't really help because it doesn't say where the GTX 1650 board fits in. Hence my confusion. Regards, -- Robin K Wellington "Harbour City" New Zealand

Regards If you go to /https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/current-graphics-driver-releases/28500/[1] , you'll see that there are multiple different drivers for different generation cards. I'm guessing that the different Gxx designation on driver packages refers to different driver generations.
The GTX16xx card will use the same drivers as my GTX1080Ti (being of the same generation, so the G06 drivers will be fine. I always install mine from the Nvidia installer (currently running 545.29.06) because I've never been able to actually get anything other than a black screen using the distro packages, but that's some oddity with my system because it seems to work for (almost) everyone else. Stick with the distro packages if they work for you (but if you do decide to switch to the manual installer, make sure you have dkms installed and working to manage automatic driver rebuilds with kernel updates). Thank you. In previous installations over many years I've used the manual .run approach, but more recently I've switched to the distro packages, and I understand most of that - I think. But as I've said elsewhere in this thread, my query arises out of being unable to find a direct and authoritative cross-reference between my 1650 card and the Gxx designations attaching to the distro packages. It seems there is no clear answer, and so another question arises. If more than one of the Gxx levels works with my card anyway, what is the purpose of differentiating the distro packages in the first place? Just curious ..... -- Robin K Wellington "Harbour City" New Zealand

Gxx directly correspond to NVIDIA driver series: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/unix/ Why the same card is supported by overlapping driver series is the question to NVIDIA as is the question why NVIDIA has these driver series at all. From SUSE side the only question would be the choice between the latest production and new feature branch. You could have spared the whole thread by simply running zypper install-new-recommends

Sure. But I wasn't trying to "spare a thread"; only to seek information of which I was ignorant. The impressive breadth and depth of your understanding of matters openSUSE is the envy of many of us out here, and I'm sure we're all grateful that you're willing to share it. All that aside, no doubt you'll be happy to hear that the thread had enough good info for me to go for the G06 option for a fresh install of Leap 15.5. And it all works - very well in Plasma X11, though with some way yet to go in Plasma Wayland. -- Robin K Wellington "Harbour City" New Zealand

It's to confuse the heck out of mere mortals.... My understanding is the G0X designation is some loose reference to the graphics core engine type X. (legacy, fermi, kepler, maxwell, etc..) I've always found the wikipedia page much more informative that the nvidia site (all cards on one page): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nvidia_graphics_processing_units No correlation to actual product Code-Names, etc... I'm sure there is a real reason -- but don't know who those G0X codes were developed by. I just know openSUSE has used them for years and you just look up your graphics card/engine and cross-reference it to the driver version. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

I don't know what you are talking about, but
