Hi everyone, I was just over at suse.de looking at SuSE 7.1, and I noticed reference to a "subscription" version, is that the same as the Update version in the U.S.? Also, is there any chance the update might be at stores this time around? Finally to any SuSE employee who cares to answer, I still like my idea of a "RedHat Powertools"-like version* with no manuals but 7-CD's/1 DVD in a jewel case, and a small brochure telling new users what to do to start (i.e. 5 page quick start guide). To suggest that to the actual powers that be at SuSE, should I write the German division for best results? * For those who have been using Linux for less than two years, you may not remember RH Powertools, but what it was, was 5 CD's (IIRC) in a jewel case with no support and no manuals, for $25-$35. It was a good thing.(TM) -Tim ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. Butler Universal Networks Information Tech. I would like to see a minimal package version of the SuSE distribution. Of course, don't forget to include the SuSE stickers. ;) Christopher Reimer

I would not bet on this. They have tradiutionaly done the "update" via suse only. sucks I know. They have also had a long history of being very slooow and laaate on delevery of the update. In the past I just went out and picked it up from one of the chian stores , But now with the las price increase I will wait and see. I feel its just too much to plunk down 79.00 each time around for a piont release , and will seriosly look into the update as this it the only "cost" efective way right now. Too bad it takes so long.

Use the suse "update" version

Yes it would be real nice to see a boxed set of upgrade cds with complete electronic cocumentation SOLD AT RETIAL LOCATIONS. This would be a real steal at 29.00. I never could get a formal answer to weather or not the suse upgrade version had the manuals on disk. I will say that there 7.0 pro version had a verry nice set of manuals with it. Hard copy manuals do come in handy , but I will settle for PDF files.

Well I have an update edition for 7.0 and it says the following when I do ls toganm@isguzar:~/hangar/SRPMS > ls /usr/share/doc/packages/suselxen/ SuSE-Linux-7.0.0.1a.pdf SuSE-Linux-7.0.0.1a.ps.gz SuSE-Linux.dvi SuSE-Linux.ps.gz book.dvi book.pdf book.ps.gz -- Togan Muftuoglu

Thanks , do those corrispond to the applications, Configuration, quick install, and suse linux handbook ? How did it come packaged ? just the cd/dvd or is it the same packagaging as the full versions ? Look like I will go the upgrade rout this time around.

Why don't you just update from the ftp server then? Yes, I know that we've been slow to get the new versions up in the past but that will hopefully be changing.

It's hard enough to keep the full distribution in stores b/c they *hate* our release cycle--trying to get another set of disks in stores probably isn't possible in the US (it would be in Germany).

It does I think. If not, you can always grab it from ftp.suse.com. -- Cheers, Christopher Mahmood --------------------------------------------------------------- SuSE Inc., Tel: +1-510-628-3380, x5024 580 Second St., Suite 210 Fax: +1-510-628-3381 Oakland CA 94607 Public Key: USA http://www.suse.com/~ckm/key.gpg ---------------------------------------------------------------

I would guess so. As soon as people figure out where to find it in a store, it's time for a new release. Do retail sellers get credit for unsold stock when you ask them to replace it all with a new release?

I don't know the details of that stuff since I'm just a country sysadmin and not PalmPilot-armed marketing/sales person, but I would imagine that something like a credit must happen. I get the feeling that the big stores (Frys, Bestbuy, that kind of place) just hate the logistics of it all. Of course, feedback@suse.com should hear this kind of input from customers. -- Cheers, Christopher Mahmood --------------------------------------------------------------- SuSE Inc., Tel: +1-510-628-3380, x5024 580 Second St., Suite 210 Fax: +1-510-628-3381 Oakland CA 94607 Public Key: USA http://www.suse.com/~ckm/key.gpg ---------------------------------------------------------------

The subscription thing just meant that we paid for shipping and each release was automatically shipped to you--it turned out to be more than than it was worth.

That's almost what the personal edition is--the handbook is available on ftp.suse.com (/pub/suse/i386/7.0/docu).

That's in the same price range as the personal edition, plus support. You can also buy CDs from CheapBytes.com and similar companies. -- Cheers, Christopher Mahmood --------------------------------------------------------------- SuSE Inc., Tel: +1-510-628-3380, x5024 580 Second St., Suite 210 Fax: +1-510-628-3381 Oakland CA 94607 Public Key: USA http://www.suse.com/~ckm/key.gpg ---------------------------------------------------------------

True. What I did differently, was suggest that users get all of the CDS (7) + the DVD (1), but receive absolutely no documentation other than a simple 2-3 pg. pamphlet (i.e. "Insert CD into drive, follow prompts, thank-you for buying SuSE!") Then sell it for the same price as the personal edition (approx). Call it the "you are on your own" version or something... It would cost more than the Cheapbytes CDs, but it would have the nice advantage of including the DVD, and packaging it all in a nice jewel case (like 6.1 had). -Tim ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. I suggested something similar when the discussions for splitting into the distribution in "Personal" and "Professional" were going on since, if I were a customer, that's what I'd want to buy. That's ashame - I know I'd be first in line at the store to buy that if they offered it. Maybe you could talk the others at SuSE into conducting an online poll to see what SuSE customers think. ;-) -Tim ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. There's an (un?)official policy in the company that everything we sell must come with support. Plus, we're a bit wary of polls after the "name our mascot" one that gave us Geeko ;) Seriously, people really do read feedback@suse.com. -- Cheers, Christopher Mahmood --------------------------------------------------------------- SuSE Inc., Tel: +1-510-628-3380, x5024 580 Second St., Suite 210 Fax: +1-510-628-3381 Oakland CA 94607 Public Key: USA http://www.suse.com/~ckm/key.gpg ---------------------------------------------------------------

To tell you the truth , I have bumped each upgrade since 5.3 , and only used the tech suport on only two of those piont releases , the first 5.3 and 6.4 , otherwise all tech suport has been from the list and has bean more helpfull. I would not mind a version with out the tech suport , just charge when they call in on the rare occasion that they need it , or go buy a box off the shelf if oyu realy need it rapido ,they only take calls twice a week last I heard.

Hi all, As for me, even though I agree that the full distribution is quite expensive, I always buy the full edition. I give the earlier version then to a school or to students. It's my way of helping open source and maybe supporting SuSE. I don't know if it's legal.... Filip. Le Jeudi 25 Janvier 2001 22:59, vous avez écrit :

I believe its legal as long as they know about the License Agreement (in case one of the students does something brilliant, he has to give it back to the community). Anybody correct me if I am wrong. Matt On Fri, 26 Jan 2001, filip wrote:
