Re: [SLE] Bugzilla for SuSE: PLEASE!
I agree 100%. I just submitted two bugs to mozilla last week and I got the feeling that: 1. the stuff was submitted properly 2. the stuff was read 3. the guys are working on the problem or dismissed it as not important or no true bug. That is true interaction. Sending email to feedback@suse.com is a dark tunnel. Everybody knows how quickly 50 mails come in and yours just got swamped into neverland. I send feedback emails before requesting ifhp to be bundled with suse and it still isn't after 4 releases even though suse ships lprng which is created by the same guy. I also requested livejournal to be bundled and I don't think it will ever make it. I submitted the fact that the modules images miss drivers from the 2.4 kernel. How hard is it to check /lib/modules/2.4.x/kernel/drivers/ what modules are missing and rearrange the modules on the floppy disks or create a modules3 image? The bug system from Mozilla seems to be working and I'd be more than happy to use it for SuSE products instead of sending emails to this list and shouting out "something is broken". The only fear I have is SuSE doesn't have the staff and time to run such system because they fear most things submitted won't be true bugs and takes away time from the most apparenty bugs, which they can track themselves. mk

It is sometimes frustrating to see problems, but not be able to follow the progress of their resolution. AFAIK there is not 'standard' way to report a bug, much less follow up on one, or determine if the bug is already reported. I have found such systems invaluable as an SA running a large network. It may be hard to put in place and get people to use it, but once it is in place, it makes everything much smoother, and saner.

The whole idea of secrecy can be compromised if we create our own public SuSE bug database. I am not sure who will look at the bugs and fix them. Meanwhile we can post them into this newsgroup and discuss them openly. Sincerely, Alexey Solofnenko. _____ < http://members.home.com/asolofnenko/ > Alexey N. could this not also be a matter of licensing? I know a lot of guys who write various types of programs ... some are free and/o easy to license , and others simply are not, they are intended as commercial products ....
I know how frustrating it is to feel one's feedback isn't recieved or at least not paid attention to .. but , frankly , I'd rather the Suse guys kept working on the next version ...
I would opt for bug-fixing as being paramount over .. what is it .. 3 versions per year !.
most likely fixoring the same bugs that people have noted.
There is a bug I have reported here, to support (who refused to answer it, despite it concerning KDE, which is a topic in their online support submission form), and to feedback. It has been in Suse since version 7.0. Since those packages are usually installed
by some folksas the variuous packages become available ... it must be equally maddening to get these messages from users and not be able to figure out exactly what verions of which pieces are causing the headaches.
A proper bug-submission mechanism would forestall that kind of problem.
After all we keep hearing from users here that they "haven't got time to read all that stuff" perhaps some of the suse folks suffer from verbage fatigue as well ??
Hang on a moment. Suse is a commercial organisation, selling a packaged product. They may not be able to fix bugs in the software that they supply as is, but in software that they Suse'ify (the kernel for one), or that is theirs (yast, sax etc) they do have some responsibility. And actually it is in their own self-interest.
BTW is bugzilla easily licensed ??
It's open-source I believe. And before anyone of the "Suse can do no wrong" brigade starts to flame me just bear in mind that I use Suse, that I have a very high regard for it. That does not mean I find everything in the garden rosy. -- Regards Cliff

afterthought: A truly wise man never plays leapfrog with a unicorn.
I couldn't agree more. How many problems posted on this list are bug related? Not many I'd say. In fact, most of the problems seem to occur because many of us are not content with the current release of SuSE and are always set on getting the latest version of a particular package (KDE 2.2 for example). What's your computer for? Doing work? Or just play? I have confidence that SuSE are doing a good job and have their eye on the ball. The changes between SuSE 7.0, 7.1 and 7.2 are testiment to this. To benefit from a bug reporting system SuSE need to know that the information entered is valid. This requires a certain competence level that many users won't have. This list generates between 100 and 150 messages each day; can you image what would happen with a public bug reporting system? I've been using this list since July and already I see the same questions posted from time to time because it's easier to ask a question than to find out for yourself. Here's a useful resource that everyone should use before posting on any list: http://www.google.com/. ;-) M
