Unofficial - Suse 10.1 DVDs for 32-bit and 64-bit
Hi there, I've made some 10.1 DVDs using the fantastic makeSUSEdvd scripts. I've also added the CD6 (non-OSS) stuff to the build so you have a full distro with all the SuSE goodness. You can get them via Bittorent. See: http://linuxtracker.org/torrents-search.php?search=10.1&cat=0&cat=316&incldead=0 Direct links: CD 1-5 (OSS) + CD6 (Non-OSS) ------------------------------------------------- http://linuxtracker.org/download.php?id=1994&name=SUSE-10.1-i386-DVD.iso.torrent - 32 bit DVD (CD 1-6) http://linuxtracker.org/download.php?id=1995&name=SUSE-10.1-x86_64-DVD.iso.torrent- 64 bit DVD (CD 1-6) NB: These are unofficial. They aren't provided by the OpenSuSE.org project / SUSE or Novell. -- Matt Bottrell mbottrell@gmail.com

From my point of view, it's a serious drawback that there is no "official" DVD in the first place. Many people don't understand that and it sheds some negative light onto the project. At least judging the things I have heard here...

I have seen some comments in other places that people had some problems with such DVDs when registering 10.1 (comment: although no personal data is submitted in this registration process, I again think that this is step in the wrong direction!). Do you know about any such problems? It seems as if a string 'SUSE-Linux-10.1-Add-on' is submitted and this leads to a "No products to register" on the server side...

Thanks anyway... ;-) Cheers, Th.

Well, the CD is not a product you could register, because it is not from SUSE. I can look into it for later versions. Not right now. houghi -- Nutze die Zeit. Just to add to that ... I've also created Suse Linux 10.1 OSS (no CD6) ... http://linuxtracker.org/torrents-details.php?id=1998&hit=1 : 32-bit Edition http://linuxtracker.org/torrents-details.php?id=1999&hit=1 : 64-bit Edition -- Matt Bottrell mbottrell@gmail.com

Some others you can create: CD1-3+6 CD1+6 CD1-6 + MPlayer + libcssdvd + mad + ... That last one could be a nice one. first make a directory (e.g. ~/media_32bit), then make the following subdirectories: athlon i386 i486 i586 i686 noarch Download the needed RPMs into each subdirectory. Download anything else you might want to add. run `makeSUSEdvd -a ~/media_32bit` and your multimedia DVD is ready for use. houghi -- Nutze die Zeit. I like your thinking!
I will probably play with the last option tomorrow (after mothers day here in Oz). I understand the 'political correctness' of not having the multimedia stuff in there -- but from an end-user view its a real PITA, and something that holds back many Joe Six packs from taking up a Linux desktop. Hard to explain to the user the benefits of a Lin Desktop -- when they come back with "But I can play DVDs and MP3 straight with Windows XP". I hope it's something Novell look at addressing in the next release. -- Matt Bottrell mbottrell@gmail.com

Not sure about the MP3 stuff, but normally WindowsXP does not play DVDs by default. houghi -- Nutze die Zeit. Sie ist das Kostbarste, was wir haben, denn es ist unwiederbringliche Lebenszeit. Leben ist aber mehr als Werk und Arbeit, und das Sein wichtiger als das Tun - Johannes Müller-Elmau

Really? I thought Windows Media Player supported it outta the box. *shrugs* Most ppl however get DVD playback software with either their DVD hardware or video cards these days (pity it's normally Windows only) :-/ -- Matt Bottrell mbottrell@gmail.com

Yes, or pre-installed by their hardware vendor. Also sometimes the software is availble on the DVD itself. houghi -- Nutze die Zeit. could it be possible that the licence apply to any reader? I mean, I have a driver cd with all what is necessary to read dvd/mp3 with windows. but I have not Windows :-) may I legally read mp3/dvd? should be! I paid for! jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://dodin.org/galerie_photo_web/expo/index.html http://lucien.dodin.net http://fr.susewiki.org/index.php?title=Gérer_ses_photos

Sure you are allowed to see and hear them. However it might be that the software to do so is not available. Look at it this way. You make your own music or make your own DVD. You certainly have the rights to view them. The license is not about the media you are playing. It is about the player itself. You have the right to use the player that they gave you. If that does not work, it does not mean you can use another one. Anyway. There are solutions that are pretty easy. wget http://houghi.org/script/MPinstaller.10.1 && sh MPinstaller.10.1 (Untested for SUSE 10.1) or wget http://houghi.org/script/MPinstaller && sh MPinstaller for SUSE 10.0 houghi -- Nutze die Zeit. Shouldn't be...
I've used the normal (import 1-5) and then split the various archs for the Non-OSS stuff and added those additional RPMs with the -a command of makeSUSEdvd. As such the "Suse-Linux-10.1" will be added, as with this method -- it's the usual CD -- with just the extra packages thrown in. :) Happy to be corrected however. ;-) Cheers, Matt. -- Matt Bottrell mbottrell@gmail.com
