8.0 Install freezes machine
Hello List members, I have a machine that has SuSE 7.2 installed and running fine. When I boot from the 8.0 CD or the boot diskettes created from the 8.0 CD1 the machine freezes up early in the install process. It always hangs up just after selecting the language, when it is checking the HD modules. Here is the WEIRD Part: This same machine works perfectly OK when I boot from the 7.2 CD !! This seems to involve the SCSI module for the Adaptec 2940 UW . Is this a real bug? Can I do anything to get the 8.0 upgrade installed? Thanks! .................PeterB
Thanks for the quick reply!
This freeze up situation will occur on a 'fresh' or 'clean' install too. It freezes at such an early point in the
YAST process that it never gets to 'look' at the HD contents.
Also bear in mind that this PC has a working 7.2 Pro system installed which is working well; and
it boots from the 7.2 CD1 w/o error also.

Hello,
This is not to discourage upgrade installs but just my personal preference. I *allways* backup to a CD and then do a *fresh* install. That gives YaST2 a chance to query and use it's findings. This gives you a picture of what the OS sees for HW and if you have for example ...SCSI issues, IRQ issues, etc., and then you can fix them before installing. There are many who need to upgrade and I think there is some help via e-mail for users who purchase a boxed set.
See http://www.suse.com/us/support/inst_support/index.html for the Official Install Help !

You might try to see if there is an OLD version of the adaptec module
available to use
as well as a new one. Seems to me the model you have can be qwerky as one of
my old ones was :-(
I don't have 8.0 yet, but the betas worked great. I run all SCSI with a
29160.

Have you tried the option, safe install (or something like it)? I had to do that when I loaded 7.3 onto my Dell 4100 laptop. dj tuchler On Mon, 2002-04-22 at 12:34, Peter VanCampen wrote:

This sounds suspiciously like the problem I ran into just a few hours ago. I was reinstalling 7.1 because there were some major hardware changes including new SCSI drive. I have the Adaptec 29160 and noticed the freeze early in the install process, I think at the same point that you mentioned but I am not sure now. While it was frozen, my boss came to talk to me so I was distracted for several minutes. When I got back to my computer I saw that it finally got past that point and went through the rest of the install except for rebooting the computer after all installation and setup were complete. Try just leaving your computer alone at that point for several minutes and see if it works. I am really curious to know if perhaps this is the same problem I had. Like you, I would also like to know if this is a bug and what is the fix for it. Since you have Adaptec SCSI, is your boot disc at any other SCSI address than the default 0? I discovered the same problem found with mixed SCSI/IDE systems: LILO gets confused about which is the first disc so I had to tamper with lilo.conf per instructions in the SuSE manual. Can anyone please explain why the installation process goes just fine but it can't boot until lilo.conf is fixed? Damon Register
Yep, and the various options with the diskettes too .......... No Joy
