[opensuse] default paper type for printing in openoffice writer
Hello: I have openSUSE 10.3 with kde 3.5.7 "release 72.4" and openoffice 2.3 (OpenOffice_org-2.3.0.1.2-10.3). Whenever I open a text document and want it to print out the paper size is set to 'letter' in file->print->properties dialog. How can I change it to keep A4 as default? I even tried to make new templates but has no any effect. Thanks, IG ____________________________________________________ Zeneletöltés könnyen, és olcsón. Thank you. I could set my template as default, and finally my template to use A4 for printing. But, I guess, this solution will work only for new documents based on this new template. Will all my older documents based on the old template still use 'letter' for printing? It's very stupid if it works like that. Mine is A4 by default, but I don't remember if/how I set it that way. Perhaps it is the default for my country, perhaps it takes the size from the printer default.

In Tools/Options, OOo, Print: printer warnings, mark on "paper size". Set your printer for a default of A4 (in cups), and if the document doesn't match, you will see a warning when you print that will allow you to go back and change the size. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Carlos, dont forget the groff page size setting in /etc/sysconfig/suseconfig. Changing the GROFF_PAGESIZE="letter" for U.S. set system wide default. That about drove me nuts having to change page size in different apps. Never have found anything in the docs about groff. Now after an install of suse I always change that which defaults to A4, to letter and no problems. Ah. Yes. Groff is used for man pages, don't know what else. And the comments are interesting: # By default, SuSEconfig tries to get the correct page size # from your system wide locale (i.e. from the system wide value of # LC_PAPER, which is possibly inherited from the system wide value of LANG). # If you want to set a page size for groff different from that, # you can set GROFF_PAGESIZE to the following values # letter, a4 # GROFF_PAGESIZE="a4" ## Path: System/SuSEconfig ## Description: ## Type: yesno ## Default: yes # LC_PAPER! cer@nimrodel:~> set | grep PAPER cer@nimrodel:~> cer@nimrodel:~> set | grep LANG GDM_LANG=en_US.UTF-8 LANG=en_US.UTF-8 The OP could try defining "LC_PAPER" himself to "A4". This other setting is curious: # Update /etc/papersize to get page sizes for groff correct? (yes/no) # UPDATE_GROFF_CONF="yes" ## Type: string(letter,legal,a4,b5) ## Default: "" ## Config: groff cer@nimrodel:~> cat /etc/papersize a4 - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Hi Carlos: Your reply regarding the warning message is another issue. I explain my problem once more. My printer is already set to A4 in cups. Still when I open a document in OOo writer and try to print it the paper size for the printer is set to 'letter'. This even occurs if I open a simple txt file (eg created by pico) although I have set my default template having A4 paper size and A4 for printing. Furthermore opening a simple txt file result in the page size set to 'letter' too. Where does OOo writer get these defaults from? How could I change them permanently to A4? Recently I could create a new default template document with A4 paper size and A4 default for printing, however these settings come into effect only if I create a new document or open a document based on this template. And I find 'nuisance' if the selected paper size for printing depends on the document instead of the printer setting. It would have sense only if my printer would be filled with different types of paper (letter, A4) and the printer would choose according to this setting. I guess this is not the case with most of us, we have either A4 or letter paper in the printer and want that type as default. Thanks again, IG Szeretnéd online kipróbálni a nyelvtudásod INGYEN? Anyhow... there are per-user settings, so try, as your normal user: lpoptions which should list the printer options active, for your default printer. Or specify the printer with "-p printer". For mine: cer@nimrodel:~> lpoptions -p tp0 job-sheets=none,none printer-info=Canon_BJC4000_-_via_turboprint printer-is-accepting-jobs=1 printer-is-shared=1 printer-make-and-model='Canon_BJC4000 TurboPrint' printer-state=3 printer-state-change-time=1187966058 printer-state-reasons=none printer-type=143436 cpi=10 lpi=6 InkType=Color_1 MediaType=Plainpaper_0 _kde-filters=true zedoColorModel=RGB PageSize=A4 Resolution=360x360dpi_1 zedoDithering=ErrorDiffusion InputSlot=AutomaticFeed zedoLicensedTo=LicenseOwner zedoColorCorrection=1 zedoUserColor=0 zedoMirror=0 zedoDuplexAdjust=0 zedoBrightness=0 zedoContrast=0 zedoGamut=0 zedoIntensity=0 zedoGamma=180 zedoColorY=0 zedoColorC=0 zedoColorM=0 zedoColorK=0 There is one "PageSize=A4" in my case.
Still when I open a document in OOo writer and try to print it the paper size for the printer is set to 'letter'. This even occurs if I open a simple txt file (eg created by pico) although I have set my default template having A4 paper size and A4 for printing. Yes, I think I have bumped into this thing previously, so I have that option set to warn me if the settings do not match. Every time I print, I make a point of looking the printer settings inside the OOo printing dialog, click on "properties", where I immediately can see the page size. I don't trust it. Fortunately, once you print a document, and you had selected "save after print", this setting is saved and holds for the next time.
Recently I could create a new default template document with A4 paper size and A4 default for printing, however these settings come into effect only if I create a new document or open a document based on this template.
I know, I read it.
And I find 'nuisance' if the selected paper size for printing depends on the document instead of the printer setting. The other place where this default could be set is based on country. This is defined under "language". I don't know if it is saved there or not, but it could be. If not... perhaps you will have to edit all the templates, one by one. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Ah, I forgot that one. But the page settings there do not hold. It has "US letter", I change to "A4", I look again, and it is back at "US letter". Doesn't work :-( - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Odd, iirc, mine always defaulted to cm/A4, but after I changed to in/letter, I never had to do anything more ???? *but*, I don't do much with oo...., I'm still struggling with cp/m wordstar keystrokes :^) oldtimers....? -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

uau. The original. I didn't find ws awkward. I easily learned its keyboard and found it quite easy and fast. Actually, I found wordperfect awkward. Very good results, but difficult and slow keyboard interface. And similar with the successors: amipro, word, openoffice... ws could be managed fast without a mouse. So successful was it that it is still used, for example, by Borland IDE and others. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. And it just like a wordperfect user looks at "any other wp", I have mastered and am comfortable with ws keystrokes. There appears nothing easily learned that is worth the effort to change. I use a 'text editor' and have no use for pertty-fying text even though there are ws keystrokes to do so. I concider myself possessing sufficient ability to convey my meaning w/o special display of the words I type :^), excepting a smiley or two. And believe that others (whose natural language is english) should do the same. Those whose native language is not english do their best to convey their meaning and it is on me to understand or pose questions achieving that understanding. -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
