[opensuse] Password is displayed by mount
When mounting an ftp host: curlftpfs user:password@home.mnet-online.de /ftp-mnet/ the password is displayed by mount. How can I get rid of this? Kind regards Karl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi Karl, I don't know how to remove the visible password, but I'd suggest that you shouldn't be using username/password ftp in the first place. Since usernames and passwords are sent in the clear with the ftp protocol, the information is subject to sniffing in transit. Anonymous ftp is fine, since the password is meaningless. I'd never heard of CurlFtpFs before, but I was intrigued, so I installed it an looked at the man page. This might be helpful: user=<user:password> Specify user and password to use for server authentication. Overrides netrc configuration. This implies that curlftpfs can use your ~/.netrc file as the source of the user name and password, which would keep it out of the ps output. If you're unfamiliar, it's described in the FAQ section at <http://curlftpfs.sourceforge.net/>. Frankly, this command should have the option of obscuring sensitive arguments. If you're going to use it a lot, you might consider requesting it as an upgrade. Or, if you're a programmer, it would not be hard to implement this yourself. Just overwrite the pertinent argv slots after copying them to a separate internal location.
Kind regards
Karl
