Where can I get 8.2? It isn't advertised on http://www.suse.com and my local stores usually take a while. Actually, I must admit, after enduring 50 "Suse 8.2 announced" messages, all about nothing interesting, I'm not even sure I want 8.2.

http://www.suse.com/us/company/press/press_releases/archive03/82.html Not going to say what is interesting or not as that is usually a rather personal preference. Matt

It isn't out yet, except to the beta testers. The website press announcement says April 14th, but I haven't seen anywhere to pre-order it from SuSE direct, as I normally do. John

I do think that Nvidia will be releasing an installer, but I have yet to see anything on their site - I do keep my eyes open though. Good day Curtis, Thank you very much for a good and positive and informing post about 8.2 beta. :o) Perhaps you can enlighten us with a few specific things? Did you get around Mozilla? If so, has the Mozilla-Java thing been fixed? In 8.1 the Java plugin Mozilla downloaded would not work, because SuSEs Mozilla was compiled with GCC 3, and the plugin was compiled with GCC 2.95 Have you been around YOU? If so, does it pick up where it left off if a downlload fails? In 8.1 YOU starts all over downloading everything again - also what has already been downloaded. How is YOU speed? Many have reported that they find YOU in 8.1 terribly slow. Best regards :o) Johnny :o) Fredag den 14. marts 2003 06:06 kvad Curtis Rey:

Just go to this site to read about them...they put a very nice GCC 3.2 compiled package of JAVA 1.4.1 and it works just fine with Mozilla when it's compiled with GCC 3.2. :) http://www.blackdown.org Or you can just ftp directly here and get it... ftp://ftp.tux.org/pub/java/JDK-1.4.1/i386/01 The file you want is called " j2re-1.4.1-01-linux-i586-gcc3.2.bin ". After downloading just move it to /usr/lib and do this.. 1. chmod +x j2re-1.4.1-01-linux-i586-gcc3.2.bin 2. ./j2re-1.4.1-01-linux-i586-gcc3.2.bin This will unpack it into " /usr/lib/j2re1.4.1 " You do not have to change the default settings for Java at all. Instead you just make a softlink from your /opt/mozilla/plugins directory to the plugins directory in /usr/lib/j2re1.4.1/ and it should look like this... libjavaplugin_oji.so -> /usr/lib/j2re1.4.1/plugin/i386/mozilla/javaplugin_oji.so After making this softlink then Java should work just fine with your GCC 3.2 compiled browser. :) It's not the best solution but it's a hell of a lot better then waiting for Sun to pull the heads from where then Sun doesn't shine in order to get a GCC 3.2 compiled pkg from them. And blackdown's been around a long time. I've never heard complaints about them. Cheers! -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe.. I usually test it at various sites, such as nvidia. It renders their page just like it should. I don't think the issue with the compliers is a problem. Since everything out of the box is compiled with the same version. > > Have you been around YOU? > If so, does it pick up where it left off if a downlload fails? > In 8.1 YOU starts all over downloading everything again - also what > has already been downloaded. > > How is YOU speed? > Many have reported that they find YOU in 8.1 terribly slow. > You has been improved. It is streamlined more and they just updated the ftp sites. If you pick the new ones then you should see an improvement (ymmv). I have a cable modem and a fairly fat 1.5 mbps downstream pipe, so those on modem/phone or ISDN - well I don't know if the difference is noticable or not. Also, theres a new program called "SuSE watcher" that sits in the panel. It watches for updates and lets you know - if you open it you can poll the server and it will give a list of any updates so you can see if any pertain to your needs. Also, YOU has a save state option. One may save it or refuse it - though I believe it was in the previous version - I am farily confident that this was also looked into. > Best regards :o) > > Johnny :o) > > Fredag den 14. marts 2003 06:06 kvad Curtis Rey: > > Beta testing has closed. * Curtis Rey;
Beta testing has closed. It went very well and it was determined that the last series of the test were unneeded due to the fact that the last beta went so well. It has some new features, and has the new things such as X4.3, kde3.1 and a few others integrated. From my personal experience I found 8.2 to be a combination of the previous two releases with more polish and refinements. YaST seems to be better integrated and little more comprehensive. The new kernel has more drivers (actually quite a few more) and IMHO is also a more polished kerenl. Furthermore, IIRC there are some features in the kernal the might be from 2.5 that were in a stable state
Well there are also tools like uml (usermode linux which is very insteresting) webmin, QoS wondershaper script ( both with cbq and htb) fetchmsttfonts script was available via YOU ( downloading the fonts from corefonts.sourceforge.net ) once networking is done there is a test phase which is also used to check if there are available updates other then just checking network connection. Postfix is 2.0x there is Exim (however YaST2 can only configure Sendmail and Postfix) Some security tools ie harden_suse was not functioning as it should ( hence it will not be included, bastille IMHO is broken and is not as simple as harden_suse the README.SuSE file has a list of things working and broken. However I think bastille will see a couple of upgrades before it makes it to the final distro SuSEfirewall2 has QoS option also, looks like I need to update the Unofficial Firewall2 document :-( Snort was 1.8.7 ( looks like this will be updated on the final as on the SuSE-Security list it was mentioned as 1.9.1 ) I would say 8.2 is a candidate for desktop fans. However I would not use it as a production server, well I normally do not use any new release anyway. ( my firewall is still running 7.1 with kernel 2.2.19 web/ftp servers running 7.3 with 2.2.19 ) So do not take my words to make a decision as I am conversative on the security and stability side -- Togan Muftuoglu Unofficial SuSE FAQ Maintainer http://dinamizm.ath.cx
