Hi, Is there any feature in KDE where one can search menu items of the program? Someone was telling me at FOSDEM while discussing HUD that KDE used to have such a feature or a patch. I am new to KDE, still exploring all the features. What did you mean by top line of the kicker menu. Where is Kicker menu? Ok, more proper would be kicker-menu which used to be from kicker pgm and is now a plasma app. if you open the menu, lower left corner "opensuse-ball" on unmodified panel stock on bottom of screen, the top line is a text box which will do a menu search. It is even labled "search" {8^)/ -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Patrick is just talking about the standard Kickoff Menu for KDE... just click the Geeko (bottom right) and at the top is the search field. You're overthinking it :-) C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

My bad ;-) That I know and I am also using krunner (and loving it). I was asking about something that can search the menu items of and app (such as filters of GIMP), just like HUD. gimp provides a filter search. It is now under the "help" menu. gimp 2.6.12 -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Aha... I don't know of anything currently in KDE that searches at that level... or any Desktop that does what HUD does. That's fairly new for everyone. C -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

It's not in the "Classic" menu. One thing I miss from kde 3 is opening the menu, pressing / and then typing the name of something to see where it is in the menu. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I am still trying to work out what exactly that you are missing from KDE3 of which you speak above. Perhaps a concrete example? BC -- Aspire to inspire before you expire. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

In KDE3, when you clicked on the geeko to open the menu and pressed /, a box would open where you could start typing the app name. As you did that, the menu selection would narrow until you found the app you wanted, so that you could click on it. This is apparently in the Application Laucher style, but not Classic style menu. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Ok.......but isn't this now covered by the Search box at the top of the Kickoff Launcher? I have been spending the day installing and trying out some text editors (to replace kwrite which doesn't print) and I used this Search feature to run each one. The only hassle I found with this - which is probably a minor bug - is that what you type in there is case sensitive where it wasn't before (as far as I can remember): I had to type in KoalaWriter, and not koalawriter, for this editor to be found. Yes and no. Yes it is in that you can type the app name or related keywords and you will (hopefully) see the app you want. But... no in that it doesn't show you where in the KickOff "tree" the app is located. I used to use the old tree search a lot, but the redesign of Kicker to KickOff made that way of working essentially obsolete - you add your frequently used apps to the Favorites, and for the rarely used apps, a few letters in the search box brings up what you're looking for... it's a LOT faster (in my experience) than navigating the nested menus even when you know exactly where the app is located in the tree. you have a very neat idea. I seems pretty easy to change the "just show the name" to "show the menu tree", I created a https://features.opensuse.org/313212 entry for it. edit it at will, you can probably word it better than me :-)

often do the same, but you have to know at least 4 letters (is this still true?) of the name, knowing the path allow also you to find other similar application installed by default (or two years ago and forgotten :-) thanks jdd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I edited it for you to clean up the English used.. but... I question whether openFATE is the right place for it. To me, this is much more suited for an enhancement request upstream at kde.org. What a timing. I think Alex is working on AppMenu Runner, which will add that feature. I think he has posted the code. http://www.afiestas.org/appmenu-runner-meet-the-kde-hud/ This can be exciting and if stays 'supplementary' unlike Unity HUD's replacement of menus it can be very useful in some (not every) case. I see...akin to having the Edit Menu tree listing show up (which happens now when you right-click on Kickoff). I haven't checked (as this feature is not really important to me) but there is the option to configure shortcuts in this Edit Menu tree; perhaps this is where it could be done for "/" to do what it did before?
