Re: [SLE] Upgrading-a novice question
As we've said time and time again, you can't do that. Going from 6.0 to 6.1 is really easy. Going from 6.0 (or 6.1, for that matter) to 6.2 is equally easy, assuming that you do it the *right* way. The right way involves lots of swapping CD's and booting off of a floppy (or CD001, if you have El Torrito extensions in your BIOS :). To avoid this hassle, I always install from an Evaluation CD, and simply add the packages I want later. Perhaps it is possible to simply install the RPM's you want, but I'd not advise that you try. 6.0/1 are based on glibc2, 6.2 is based on glibc2.1, and many of the bins simply won't link against the old libs (if you miss upgrading them). 6.0/1 are based on an older (<3.0?) version of RPM, and the RPM database has to be rebuilt to use the new one. 6.2's authentication is based on PAM, so something that doesn't use PAM to authenticate will not work either. 6.1 was basically a bugfix for 6.0. 6.2 is actually an upgrade. -- -=|JP|=- Jon Pennington | SuSE Linux 6.2 super-suser@eudoramail.com | Kernel 2.2.10 Kansas City, Missouri, USA | AMD K6-III 450 Moderator of LUG-KC@onelist.com http://www.onelist.com/subscribe/lug-kc On Thu, 30 Sep 1999 17:30:04 Brenton Pettitt wrote:
Hi all,
I would like to upgrade my distribution from SuSE 6.0 >6.2 without reinstalling everything using the 6.2 boxed set of cds.
However, I'm not clear what my existing manual is saying with regard to the upgrade process in chapter 15.
I note that this can't be done with the system running. Does this mean that I need to use the boot disk that comes with 6.0 or with 6.2 (which one?) to initiate the upgrade process or can I simply insert the 6.2 cds and tell Yast to update without using any bootdisk.
