Have used smbpasswd or how are you authenticating?

Aren't there two methods of authentication? A workgroup method or the domain method? I think you want the workgroup method. But I am faaarrrr from an expert on this.

I have linked several Linux boxes together but never tried shares so this is new to me as well :) Sean -- GPG Key Id 120A02FB ICQ: 679813 Jabber: tcobone@jabber.org SuSE 9.0 for when you want to spend time doinmg and not rebooting

Sean Hi this is an example of the smb.conf that will work with Windows as an Primary Domain Server You need to change the workgoup to your workgroup. and for the logins the samba_server name. you need to create a directory if you want the netlogon possiblilty with a script for example
"echo Setting Current time ......... net time \\samba_server /set /yes" if you create this in linux you need to change it so it is readable from DOS smb.conf [global] workgroup = WorkGroup os level = 65 unix extensions = Yes encrypt passwords = yes map to guest = Bad User printing = CUPS printcap name = CUPS socket options = SO_KEEPALIVE IPTOS_LOWDELAY TCP_NODELAY log level = 1 log file = /var/log/%m.log max log size = 1000 name resolve order = hosts lmhosts wins bcast time server = Yes wins support = No veto files = /*.eml/*.nws/riched20.dll/*.{*}/ security = user server string = Samba Server add user script = /usr/sbin/useradd -c Machine -d /dev/null -s /bin/false %m$ domain master = yes domain logons = yes local master = yes preferred master = yes ;; ldap server = 127.0.0.1 logon script = login.bat logon home = \\Samba_Server\%U\.profile logon path = \\Samba_Server\profiles\%U logon drive = H: [netlogon] path = /etc/samba/netlogon writeable = no write list = ian [homes] comment = Home Directories valid users = %S browseable = no read only = No create mask = 0640 directory mask = 0750 guest ok = no printable = no Have fun experimenting. Hi Sean How have you set the Windoze box up, have you set it to logon it to a NT domain? Ian

Here's an smb.conf from a machine I've got that acts as the login server for a win98 workgroup. I don't have NT style domains, so hope that doesn't vitiate the usefulness too much. As I remember it, win98 encrypts its passwords automatically, so you don't need to do anything with them. But you need to add a matching (i.e. matching their *nix username/passwd, and what they'll type at login) username and password with smbpasswd -a issued as root for each user who'll be logging in. N.B. you can give users /bin/false as a login shell if you don't want them escaping to a genuine shell on the *nix box. I suppose everyone's already mentioned the online Samba book on the O'Reilly site. They've probably also mentioned you need to let the clients hookup to ports 137-139, so they can't be firewalled off from those clients. With this setup all my win98 machines can print, logon, and use the shares for which their users are valid group members. It depends a bit on what you mean by 'connecting' but if you already have a local area network and you need for the Windows box and the Linus box to appear on the same network, then you need to check out Samba. A good place to start... http://www.samba.org/ Don Henson
