hello all, I'm running suse 6.1 and netscape 4.51 I made the mistake of recieving my e-mail through netscape as root, after some time i relized that I can't use the icq program of my choice as root.... and irc as root is not wise either (not sure why yet)... Can anybody tell me how to get all of my netscape mail over to another profile along with all of my folders and stuff.... You should only log in as root when doing system maintenance or other tasks that require root access, otherwise it is a security hole.
Can anybody tell me how to get all of my netscape mail over to another profile along with all of my folders and stuff....
It has been a while since I did this (I was also using 6.1 and moving mail from root to a user...) but I think it was a simple case of copying the .netscape directory in root's home over to the user's home directory. Then you have to chown the .netscape directory. So basically, as root: cp -r /root/.netscape /home/<username>/.netscape chown -r <username>.users /home/<username>/.netscape where <username> is the username you are going to be running as. Notice also that I copied the files rather than moving them... this is in case it doesn't work. Once you are confident that everything is as it should be with netscape (other than the crashing...) you can delete the /root/.netscape directory. I know I'll be corrected where I've gone wrong (at least I hope I will) ;-) Hope that helps, Chris -- __ _ -o)/ / (_)__ __ ____ __ Chris Reeves /\\ /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ICQ# 22219005 _\_v __/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
(as root)
cd /root
cp -rip nsmail /home/normal_user/nsmail
cd /home/normal_user
chmod 755 nsmail
cd nsmail; chmod 644 *; cd ../
chown -R normal_user nsmail
chgrp -R normal_group nsmail
su - normal_user
Or something along those lines, where normal_user is the username of a
non-root account, that is used for normal everyday stuff. Basically copy
the nsmail directory over, this will put all roots mail into that accounts
netscape mail. If you want perferences you could also copy of the
/root/.netscape directory to /home/normal_user/.netscape
Make sure you back up everything and have an extra copy of all files and
directories (just in case)
Basically the .netscape folder under any users home directory (including
root) stores your peferences, bookmarks, cache, etc. The nmail folder under
any users home directory (including root's) stores the mail for the Netscape
mail program.
As far as run irc as root, a normal_user should be able to execute the irc
client without any problems.

Hmmm. The reason why I didn't mention nsmail is because on my system the nsmail folder is totally empty and everything is in ~/.netscape/mail . I'm not arguing with you (you're probably right) ;-) It's just that that isn't how it works for me and I'm wondering what I did differently... Maybe it was because I copied it over from Windows. That's probably it. Yes?
