I guess it breaks the entire USB bus, does a reconnect fix the hang? Try this kernel with newer usb drivers, maybe it cures this bug: ftp.suse.com/pub/people/olh/kernel/usbtest/ -- USB is for mice, FireWire is for men!
It's hard to say if it's working better, my X Windows did not start so I
do not know if my mouse was working before I turned on scanner. I can
try to build 2.4.21rc2 myself, maybe it would help?

I assume you use that binary only driver, configure X to use the 'nv' driver and try again. Or boot into runlevel 3, just add a '3' at the grub boot prompt, this will start gpm and you will see if the mouse is dead. You could compare that to the original 8.2 kernel.
