Has anyone used XFCE4 under SuSE 9.1?
Wouldn't run a *nix without it.
How did you decide to make XFCE4 available as (a) an option or (b) the default?
If your desktop manager is kdm (the default) then you need a xfce4 file in /opt/kde3/share/apps/sessions called xfce4.desktop, I edited the xfce3 entry to reflect the changes, but there is a rpm containing the necessary file about. Best, Ben

http://scott.exti.net/xfce4/4.0.4/rpm/xfce4-kdm32-0.1-1suse.noarch.rpm . It works with Xfce 4.0.5, as well. Novell has a bunch of goodies for me in the mail, including 9.1. Once I get that, I'll be building Xfce RPMs for 9.1 (and possibly SLES 8, if there is any demand). -- Homepage http://scott.exti.net XFce desktop environment http://www.xfce.org Goodies for the XFce desktop http://xfce-goodies.berlios.de GPG public key ID: 811B00AB

You da' man! Thanks. Dennis - yes, as Lee says, just copy xfce.desktop to xfce4.desktop and then edit xfce4.desktop with those changes. Stan

There are already XFce4 rpms for SuSE 9.1 and you may download them from this site: http://xfce.org/index.php Lee -- --- KMail v1.6.2 --- SuSE Linux Pro v9.1 --- Registered Linux User #225206 On any other day, that might seem strange...

Cool. Saves me some work, then. -- Homepage http://scott.exti.net XFce desktop environment http://www.xfce.org Goodies for the XFce desktop http://xfce-goodies.berlios.de GPG public key ID: 811B00AB
Really dumb question in regards to this xfce4 - If I install it on SuSE 9.1, will it automagically be selectable as an alternate desktop gui from the login screen, or will it kick KDE out, etc. (Linux noob alert ;)

Actually no Steve. That's what we've been discussing, how to add it to your interface menu, so you can select it rather than KDE or Gnome. Just installing the rpms will not add it to the menu. Go back to the previous mails and you'll see what is needed to add it. Very fast minimal GUI, but very feature rich. Question.. I'm running the 64bit version, installing the i586 version should be ok right? Or is there plans for a 64bit conversion of Xfce? Thanks -Jason

I don't know that I would recommend running the i586 version. You could try rebuilding from the source RPMs. If that doesn't work, there *are* x86_64 RPMs of Xfce built for Fedora which should work on SuSE. http://moongroup.com/yum-repository/fedora/linux/1/x86_64/ . -- Homepage http://scott.exti.net XFce desktop environment http://www.xfce.org Goodies for the XFce desktop http://xfce-goodies.berlios.de GPG public key ID: 811B00AB
