Hi, I just got the suse 8.0 from the ftp server, when I tried to install it from my hard drive; ie: made a boot disk, then chose start-installation and hard disk, I gave Yast the dir where my files are stored (hda5 vfat). It first went good but after it had formatted my linux partition it told the /dev/hda5 was already mounted and I was unable to mount it to /mnt/windows/D, It just ignored the warning and went a step further, and then, before installing the rpm, it told me the same thing but this time, i could not continue. I understand clearly why /dev/hd5 is already mounted since I'm running the install from it, what I don't, is how can I install then ? My idea was to burn the suse cd, but I only have a big directory where all the package are (a1, a2, ap1 and so on). So I'm unable to burn the CD, can some one give me a list of what files are supposed to be on cd1-cd2 and so on ? or explain me how do I install the suse from my hard drive. I looked hours in google, news group, irc, but no one could (wanted) to help me, so please if you have any idea, reply to this post -- Cheers, Akeru mailto:ikena@gmx.net
Hi! Did you specify a mount point for the partition with the installation files partition part of the setup? When I did that I had exactly the same messages that you described. Try once more without specifying a mount point for the partition. /Nils-Olov
Hi Nils-Olov, NOF> Try once more without specifying a mount point for the partition. I did it, /dev/hda was mounted to /mnt/windows/D , I removed that mount point and the first error went away, but when the installation arrives at the next screen (package installation) I get the very same error : "can't find the appropriate support for the installation, /dev/hda : mount failed, /dev/hda is already mounted or /tmp/mnt is busy" I tried to mount it by hand, ie switching console and type some commands but none of 'em worked, anyways, thanks for the help... -- Cheers, Akeru mailto:ikena@gmx.net
Hi, Two question: 1. how to switch boot mode from graphical to ASCII mode [ yast1 could do this but is no yast1 in 8.0 can yast2 do this ?] 2. I can't setup my printer, it is OKIPAGE 6ex in HP mode [yast2 complain about parallel port ] [at the time of instalation system recognized printer correctly as a OKIPAGE 6ex ] Any suggestion will be really appreciate j

Even though I too miss Yast1, the new Yast 2 has come far. :-) Go to System, Runlevel Editor.
2. I can't setup my printer, it is OKIPAGE 6ex in HP mode [yast2 complain about parallel port ] [at the time of instalation system recognized printer correctly as a OKIPAGE 6ex ]
Cups or lprng? Is it hooked to your paralel port? Is your paralel port set up in CMOS as SPP, EPP, or ECP? Assuming your printer like to talk and not just listen (i.e. communicate status, etc., not just print), it needs to be at least EPP. I had no problems, so to help we need more info. BTW, there is an updated Yast2 cups module, have you got it? -- Joe & Sesil Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM. It is EPP, Yast2 give a message: "No parallel device ( /dev/lp? ) founded. It seems that your parallel port is not properly configured" well ls -al /dev/lp? /dev/lp1 /dev/lp2 /dev/lp3 any suggestion will be rally appreciate. Jul

You are missing lp0. You should use mknod to recreate it. I've never done it, but I believe that is the command to make a character device. Check info mknod or man mknod. -- Joe & Sesil Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM. Sorry I just miss lp0, but it exist in dev, so ls -al /dev/lp? /dev/lp0 /dev/lp1 .... The problem appear to be just with SuSE, in Madrake very thing is OK. j

I would check the output of /var/log/messages or boot.msg to see what is happening with your paralel port, and also check /etc/modules.conf to see what your setup is for the paralel port. -- Joe & Sesil Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM.
