Thanks for the reply. I've done everything you suggested. I am trying to use the desktop as server and laptop as client (though I'ld like to use them both ways ultimately.) Anyway, I still get the same error message. I think it's coming from the laptop before it even tries to connect to the desktop. Again, thanks the suggestions and let me know if you have any other thoughts.
On the laptop, stop the servers with: /sbin/init.d/nfsserver stop /sbin/init.d/rpc stop
then restart them /sbin/init.d/rpc start /sbin/init.d/nfsserver start
and see if any errors are mentioned. You should get a response "done" after each command.
If they start error free, check your ethernet connection by trying to telnet or ftp from the laptop to the desktop. Make sure you have inetd started on the desktop.
If the ftp dosn't connect, it's probably an ethernet problem. If it does connect with ftp, try installing the user space nfsserver server in package n, and turning off the kernel based nfs server in yast. The kernel based server is known to choke sometimes.
Thanks to all who replied. I have checked everything suggested. The ethernet is fine. I'm using masquerading from the desktop to provide a connection to the cable modem for the laptop, and that's working fine. I've restarted both RCP and the nfsserver several times and tried the user space version of the latter. I'm still experimenting but any other hints greatly appreciated!
