[opensuse] mkinitrd failure (raid related?)
Got this error running on vanilla linux-2.6.25.4 and the KOTD kernel-source-2.6.25.4-14.1.x86_64.rpm Kernel image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.25.4-14-default Initrd image: /boot/initrd-2.6.25.4-14-default Root device: /dev/md2 (mounted on / as ext3) Resume device: /dev/md1 Fatal storage error. Device /dev/ does not have a driver. All I could find on Google was a pointer to the (old) bug report: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-bugs/2007-08/msg02198.html Any suggestions? Thanks. This might be a long shot, but resume will not work from a raid1 swap. Maybe try adding noresume to the kernel line. Hi Michael, I assume, like me, you've just upgrade your kernel to 2.6.25. By doing that, you also needed a new udev ( probably v120 ) and with it, new mkinitrd versions, among others. Since you claimed you installed kernel from KOTD, I'm assuming you installed all of required dependencies. When I upgraded, I also had an mkinitrd problem. Not like yours but lets see if my solution also works for you. It seems, according to your menu.lst file, that you've been doing upgrade after upgrades. Clean that file to just hold your needed boot options ( just an example ): # Modified by YaST2. Keep it simple. I also removed the XEN entry - Add it if all works well. After all this is done, just issue as root, the mkinitrd command and check if all builds well. You should also take Joe Morris advice into consideration. Do not use resume on a SW-RAID swap. Hope this helps you, Rui Santos Michael Fischer wrote:

Sorry, I might have confused the KOTD with Factory. you could also try the mkinitrd command with the simplified file grub file. If it doesn't work, try these: - Kernel from: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/HEAD/openSUSE_Factory/ - udev from: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/algraf:/newkernel/openSUSE_1... - rpm from: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/coolo/openSUSE_10.3/ Install all with care. Indeed. Is the udev back-compat? Further, which package would update mkinitrd? Or is that not necessary? Michael -- Michael Fischer michael@visv.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Right. So I installed the one from factory (kernel-backport repo). No luck with sudo make install for either KOTD or kernel.org vanilla. So onto installing udev-120-12.1 (same repo, 1-click install) Reboot to make sure that udev is running. Try the 'make install' commands again. Still no luck. $ rpm -qa | grep udev udev-120-12.1 $ rpm -qa | grep mkinitrd mkinitrd-2.2-18.1 Go figure. I've got two other machines with 10.3 and they've presented no problem. This machine, and this experiment with RAID1 (as per the instructions on opensuse.org) ... not been good. Could be hardware, could be kernel, software... dunno, but its not been fun so far. Grrr. Well on the x86_64 machines I used http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:mcamen:Kernel-Backport/openSU... for udev witch contains mkinitrd For i586 I used the Factory one... Rui
