Hi, linux folks, I'm new in this distribution list, so hello to every body. I've recently become a system administrator of a small network (6 pc's) with an internet connection via ISDN. I've found some problems: 1. SENDMAIL: I've configured sendmail in the server (and the connection to the internet), but i'm not able to send mail in other computer. I've installed qpopper and fetchmail in the server and the clients use netscape in the client. I can read mail, but when I try to send any mail I receive following error:
Apr 5 12:12:28 tronki sendmail[2307]: MAA02307: ruleset=check_rcpt, arg1=
, >relay=cillana@elric.shin [10.3.20.60], reject=551 we do not relay Apr 5 12:12:28 tronki sendmail[2307]: MAA02307: from= , size=0, class=0, pri=0, nrcpts=0, proto=ESMTP, relay=cillana@elric.shin [10.3.20.60]
Anyone knows what is happening? 2. PRINTER: I've configured a printer in the server, and If I want to print in the other computers I have to restart the lpd daemon. I don't know what is happening. Anyone can guess any idea? 3. SAMBA: I use security=users and encrypt passwords and I don't understand exactly the authentication method, becouse there is an user that could enter without writting any passwd in smbpasswd file and I can't do it and smbpasswd programm doesn't work for me:
Old SMB password: New SMB password: Retype new SMB password: machine 127.0.0.1 rejected the password change: Error was : The specified password is invalid. Failed to change password for cillana
What does "passwd is invalid" mean? Thanx in advance Carlos -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

You have to allow relaying from your local network. Read the sendmail README, but you need, I think, to set up your local network in the /etc/mail/access with RELAY. See file for details. You have to update access.db after modifying the access file. By default `sendmail` doesn't allow relaying by default. Relaying is basically access to send mail out of the server. The do not relay by default for security reasons, if it relayied by default any spammer on the Internet could send mail though your mail server and put a heavy load on the server for one, and be black listed as a spammer or spam freindly site. To enable people to send email from your server, you must give them 'relay' access in sendmail by IP address. I think the file is either '/etc/mail/relay-hosts' or something to that effect. Just put one host name per line in that file then restart sendmail. You may have to snoop around the system for the exact file, (I forgot the name), it will be in "/etc" or "/etc/mail" and will have the word "relay" in the name of the file. Older sendmail installs use a file called "sendmail.cR". Also check out http://www.sendmail.org and read the FAQ, there is a section about this in there.

Sorry I don't have any idea on this.

I think you may of typed in the "Old SMB password:" in wrong?? Sorry I can't help with the printer or samba problem. I had the same problem here. I solved it using the file sendmail.cw. The relevant lines in my linux.mc file are : dnl -------------------------------------------------------------------- dnl sendmail only accepts emails as local that use the FQDN. if you want dnl to accept further hostnames as local email, add them here or put dnl them into a sendmail.cw file. dnl define(`confCW_FILE', `/etc/mail/sendmail.cw')dnl FEATURE(use_cw_file)dnl dnl dnl_______________________________________________________________________ (this is the file which you must submit to m4 in order to obtain sendmail.cf. Read the README in /usr/share/sendmail). In /etc/mail/sendmail.cw I have the names of the machines of my local network, as follows: __________________________________________________________________________ localhost horus.mistral.org amon.mistral.org ascentia.mistral.org osiris.mistral.org hathor.mistral.org __________________________________________________________________________ These are the basics. There is more to write about the practical use of sendmail but apparently every one of us has his own hack to make it operate according to his needs...hope it helps !
