I have SuSE 6.3 running on a solo 9300. It works very well. I have it dual booted with win98 and there have been no major problems (other than a few 'operator errors' along the way.) As always the only tricky problem is getting X working correctly. I found some help on the linux on laptops web site (http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/kharker/linux-laptop/) and suggest you look there. It has a couple more entries for the 9300 than when I set it up and I've been meaning to look at the video settings to see if anything is better than what I'm using so you might as well start there. If you have any specific problems let me know and if I've encountered them I'll pass on whatever I've learned, but at least you can be confident that it can be done. what problem are you having specifically ? I've done a few suse installs on laptops tho' not a Gateway Solo. If you're trying to set up X, start with 600x800 LCD - if this produces a small display with a wide black border try 1024x768. 60Hz is usual with LCDs. SaX should set up the chipset ok assuming it's standard - probably a Neomagic. Select 1024x768 & test the result. BTW, don't expect a full screen in text mode - the native resolution of LCDs makes the 80x25 text display appear in a small "box" in the centre of the screen.
