Ideal system specs for a new Linux box
Folks...
Im about to retire my p166 for a new SuSE Linux machine In the past
I've never paid much attention to hardware spec related questions (due
to the fact that I never had new hardware to deal with).
The time has come where Im going to build a new box and would appreciate
suggestions as to
need advise on

I am using an Asus A7V motherboard and find it to be excellent. It's got plenty of ports/slots on it for any kind of hardware you want.
cpu chipset
Go Athlon! I am using an 800Mhz athlon processor. Just install it and forget about it---just make sure you put a good fan on it. The 1Ghz chip should absolutely rock.
sound card <no good idea>
Soundblaster Live soundcard works great. There are many different SB Live models now, so you have to do a bit of reading on their website (http://www.soundblaster.com/) to see which one will meet your needs.
video card
This area gets a little murky as I am definitely not an X-window system expert. Personally, I like ATI videocards; but, whatever card you decide on, you need to make sure that the card is supported under the version of xfree86 that you are comfortable with or plan to install. Consult the hardware compatibility database: http://cdb.suse.de/cgi-bin/scdb?HTML=ENGLISH/cdb_listtemplates/menu.htm&LANG=ENGLISH
nic <I have nics now but they are different brands need recommendation>
don't have much experience here. I have a 3COM 905.... It was automatically recognized by YaST2. But I haven't done any linux networking yet, though I hope to soon.
hd
I use Western Digital hd's. They come with great diagnostic software. In January of this year I was working on a project that required major storage. I hadn't bought any new hd's for a while. I found Western Digital 7200 rpm 30gig drives sitting on the shelf for $99 at CompUSA. Not a sale price, either! Just before I fell over in shock, I was able to grab one for myself.
memory
go for the 133 sdram if you are going to buy the Asus board--- you may as well get the best performance possible for your system, especially since RAM has become very cheap.
modern <some sort of non winmodem>
I bought an ELSA Microlink 56K external modem because I noticed that ELSA has many modems that are compatible for linux according to a few hardware databases that I found. I had never heard of the company prior to using linux this year. I found this model on sale at Buy.com for $51 USD. YaST2 recognized it and configuration took all of 2 or 3 minutes. It's been working perfectly with every dial-up program I've tried---wvdial in console, kppp, and kde's kinternet. I never connect at anything less than 49,333 bps and when I download large files I have noticed that I can get brief bursts up to 8 or 9 K/sec.
cdr <guessing they are all the same IDE>
Be careful here. Check Suse's hardware compatibility database--- http://cdb.suse.de/cgi-bin/scdb?HTML=ENGLISH/cdb_listtemplates/menu.htm&LANG=ENGLISH It seems like most folks I've spoken to do well with Plextor, HP, Sony, and Yamaha. But you have to make sure that the specific model is supported. I hope this is helpful. Mike
