Is it legal to install same SuSE 9.2 Cd on multiple PCs?
Hello, I am a little confused about Linux licensing model and commercial distros like SuSE. Is it legal to buy one set of CDs and then install them on multiple machines? I have seen that some stores sell SuSE CDs without manuals at a very low price (<10$), are they excluding non GPL components like yast2 and other SuSE specific parts? A last one :) If I buy SLES 9 media kit, can I use it on multiple servers or it is just for one server? I understand that the support package is per-server, but I am not so sure about the software. Regards, Martin

Absolutely. Indeed, you're actually encouraged to do so! But you only get support for one machine (which is fair enough).

That sounds dodgy - they're probably copies of the SUSE CDs/DVDs because AFAIK SUSE always sells boxes including manuals. If you want a cheap/free version, download it for free from SUSE's website. If you want the physical media, buy a legit copy - it's not expensive and you know that your money's actually going to the people who built the distro. Actually, I've received support for all my machines loaded with SuSE within the 90-day period. I think it was plain from my requests for help that I was asking for help on different installations. djt

You should consider yourself fortunate. They could have insisted on supporting only one copy. Now, try that with Windows and see what happens. ;-)

Here's one question I've always had - I have WinXP on one of my home machines... On it I have VMWare. Under VMWare, I made a "clone" drive of my main bootable system that I use to sandbox new software before I decide whether it's good or bad... I wonder how Microsoft looks at that :) The same copy of Windows, running a second time, on the same PC.

I'd bet they would say it's illegal as you didn't purchase the second copy for the 'second' computer. Or the 'second' computer didn't come with windows pre-installed. Boy, I can just hear the legal team now. It's the same computer.. No, it's a different computer. No, it's the same computer, but a different bios. No, it's a different computer and needs a second copy. Ok, but what brand of computer is it? ... Personally I think it's cool. Better keep that quiet. You don't want "Godfather" Gates offering you a deal you can't refuse. ;-)

If my memory serves me well, M$ have started some campaign to legalize for free a pirated copies of XP, so it may help Steve not to go to jail :) Sunny -- Get Firefox http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=affiliates&id=10745&t=85

i am quiet sure i have seen is somehow like that in a license for XP but i work in Linux and would have to stop working and search XP to find such text but may be its on the booklets that come along with the pre-installed OEM version and the license text included ... i prefer happy working and avoid such problems hans

Well, Technically. Microsoft will throw a grenade at you and tell you to buy the (2nd Full Version) copy! Your copy of Microsoft is only good for 1 pc and 1 pc only. Anytime you have to reenter your key code twice. They will tell you that you are breaking the law and are subject to selling your soul to them. :) JD

The real thing I'm waiting for is for the one online game I play to be free of the Microsoft "Zone" logon system, and hopefully WineX will be able to run the game... Then I'm 100% free of MS!
