[opensuse] yast vs zypper and dependencies
Just a quick question about using yast vs zypper for installing software... I usually use yast2 to install software because I like the graphical interface. I noticed that if there is a dependency conflict yast will give a graphic popup with choices on how to resolve the conflict. The only issue I have with Yast is that I can't select, copy, and paste in order to troubleshoot if there is a problem. But I can do that in a konsole, so I am wanting to get more familiar with zypper. So the question is, does zypper analyze and prompt for choices if you try and install something and there is a dependency conflict? Or do you have to know in advance what the dependencies are and do all that manually? -- G.O. It does just that. If there seems to be no resolution upon answering, I can often solve it by using 'rpm -e --nodeps' on the package that seems to want to get upgraded but cannot, or an apparent dep for which is claimed cannot be provided because of the conflict. FWIW, I find Zypper more friendly overall than Apt-get, Smart, Yum or Urpmi, even though it's youngest of the group. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Thanks for the help. I will try getting used to zypper, starting with installing the nVidia driver for my system. :) -- G.O. YaST can save the list to file.
So the question is, does zypper analyze and prompt for choices if you try and install something and there is a dependency conflict? Or do you have to know in advance what the dependencies are and do all that manually?
It prints the question and you have to enter 1, 2, 3 to select one. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. I'm not sure, be I think that yast ask *before* beginning any install (on the gui), when zypper ask only when installing the offending package. This makes a difference if one install several packages (for example a pattern) as in case of cancel, zypper have already installed part of the package. is this right? thanks jdd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Yes, yast asks before. Zypper I don't remember, I don't use it much. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. i thought i'd replied to this before, and i had -- only to jdd, unfortunately. having a spate of unintentional personal replies again lately :( zypper does the same: it refreshes everything that needs refreshing, then calculates what it's going to do with the info available: packages in various repo.s, repo priorities in case of 'zypper dup', then it presents the user with the available options to the dependency conflicts, if any. only when that's done does it start downloading & installing. to solve dependency issues, i prefer YAST, too, since it's easier to see what happens when deciding to keep this or break that... -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
