Not sure if you're interested or if it's applicable, but years ago when I was sys-admin-ing, I used a product called Lone-Tar (http://www.cactus.com) on Solaris/Intel which was really simple, reliable, and inexpensive. I now have no connection with the Co. -ds BashLogic Linux wrote:

depends on the file system your machine runs... For ext3 dump/restore might be your choice. For reiserfs dump does not work, but tar does. Cheers, Winfried -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I'd still use tar anyway ;) Even when using REV drives from iomega we use tar... why bother mounting when tar can do all of that including rights/ownership... Just go: tar -cf /dev/st0 --exclude=/proc --exclude=/sys / if /dev/st0 is yur tape drive ;) Cheers -- Rory Slegtenhorst rory dot slegtenhorst at gmail dot com -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Or use something like BRU from http://www.tolisgroup.com/ I've Been using it for years. Usual disclaimers, just a happy customer. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

If you happen to be using ACLs (ie. Samba can use them.) then you will want to use something that backs them up as well. Most backup packages don't handle them. (Or didn't use to do so.) I believe STAR and xfsdump will both do so, not sure about others.
