Am thinking of getting a Nikon D50. Any hands on experience with the D50 and SuSE anyone? Cheers, Steve.

Hello Steve and list, I have had my D50 since July and I love it. Exactly what information do you need? Bill B
Hi Just whether there were any problems downloading stuff from camera to a SuSE only computer. That's all. Steve

No, not on my system. I have an AMD 64 running Suse 10.0 rc1 and all I have to do is plug in the USB cable and it appears just as any other USB hard drive. I move the pictures to my computer and go from there. I have not had any trouble so far. Bill B

None with Nikon, but no trouble with my PENTX *istD. SuSE should simply mount your camera as a USB storage device under /media with no extra input from yourself. Ken Hough

I use a D70, which is essentially the same camera, and always use a USB card reader rather than the usb link to the camera itself. Better for your camera batteries! To process the .nef RAW files, if you choose to shoot that way rather than jpeg, look at Dave Coffin's DCRAW at http://www.cybercom.net/~dcoffin/dcraw/ And the related Gimp plugin by Paweł T. Jochym at http://ptj.rozeta.com.pl/Soft/RawPhoto/ Or you could pay for the excellent Bibble image processing software from http://www.bibblelabs.com/ However, you don't need any of that to use JPEG. They're good cameras, give it a go. Best Fergus -- Fergus Wilde Chetham's Library Long Millgate Manchester M3 1SB UK Tel: 0161 834 7961 Fax: 0161 839 5797 http://www.chethams.org.uk

Card readers are OK, but I'm not keen to repeatedly remove/replace the card from/to my camera. I use a mains power supply to my Pentax *istD while downloading via USB to the PC. I use 'cdraw' and the GIMP pluggin to manage raw files (.pef in my case). Except for the most demanding purposes, I find the highest quality jpeg format to be OK. Raw files take more time/care to process. Ken Hough

Thanks Fergus. I'll be using the D50 for astrophotography through a telescope so yes, I'll be using the raw image files where possible. Thanks for the links. Steve.

I'm hoping to do some of that using my PENTAX *istD, but I don't yet own a telescope. The best that I could do presently would be via a SIGMA 100 to 300 F4 APO (that's F4 at 300mm -- a 75mm objective) plus X2 converter. I'll begin with the moon. Any suggestions to get me started? Ken Hough

Assuming iso 100, start at around f5.6 and 1/125 s for the crescent moon we have at the moment. Turn off autofocus and fix on infinity. Bracket a lot. The 300 mm setting with the x2 convertor should more than fill your frame. For the telescope, you must have good motor driven tracking and a good solid mounting.
