Mounting Win DVD drive For Install (upgrade) Over Network
Hi, I know that various pieces of this have been covered somewhere but I am having difficulties and could not find an answer to this specific problem in the support database or list archives. I am running a Suse 7.1 machine with no graphical anything installed. It's a notebook PC with no dvd drive. I have managed to get it talking across my network -at least to the point that it can ping the router and a windows machine. One the windows machine resides a DVD drive, and on that resides the Suse disk I would like to use to upgrade the machine across the network. Samba seems to be installed on the machine - there's a /etc/smb.conf file I know that there is no entry in the fstab for the windows dvd drive, because I am not certain how the syntax works. I THINK that once that is done things will be cool if I change in Yast 1 (all that's available to me) the installation source. Is this right? Thanks in advance, nick
Hi! If you want to mount a CD/DVD that is on a Windows machine you can use this command as root mount -t smbfs //tellus/E /your/mountpoint Where tellus is the windows computer, E is the DVD-drive, /yuor/mountpoint is where you want to mount the DVD on your macine. Are you going to install new programs or upgrade to a later release of SuSE? If you are going to upgrade to a later release I think you need to copy the DVD to a partition on your notebook. there have been postings recently in this list that covers installation from hard disc. But if you have an other Linux computer on your network I think it's easier to copy the DVD to that computer and use NFS when you install/update your notebook. /Nils-Olov On Sunday 28 July 2002 18.29, Nick Selby wrote:

Yes. Sadly, however, I get packet send failed to 255.255.255.255(137) ERRNO=Network is unreachable packet send failed to 255.255.255.255(137) ERRNO=Network is unreachable 561: Connection to win2k failed SMB connection failed Hmmm. It appears that perhaps samba AIN'T working here. I ran smbclient -U% -L localhost And it told me it had major headaches. However,

Okay. So lemme get this straight. I copy the DVD - the whole shebang - onto the linux machine, for example, that I am typing this on. (do I just cp * /home/nick/susedvd/ ?) Then, I ask from looking at man mount and pure guesswork, on the old crummy suse notebook I do mount -t nfs rsize=8192,wsize=8192,soft //linux/home/nick/susedvd/ /susedvd/ Sounds reasonable? Or do I need to make an fstab entry for the nfs "drive"? Thanks for your patience with my guesswork and newbieness. NIck
OK! I think it's better to start with to describe what I have done. 1. I copied everything on the CD (actually I copied from the FTP-site) to /suse/8.0/ 2. I exported /suse 3. I made three diskettes from /suse/8.0/disks/bootdisk, modules1 and modules3. 4. I booted the computer I wanted to install on with the bootdisk, put in the modules2 disk when told. When I come to the point where I could start installation, I first loaded the NIC module then started the installation. I chhosed NFS installation, entered an IP-address for the computer I was installing on, IP-address to the server and when asked which directory (/suse/8.0) As far as I can remember thats all. Just follow the instructions on screen and read on the screen how great SuSE is. Good luck! /Nils-Olov
