[opensuse] problem with OpenSUSE 11.0 Alpha3 dvd media
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi, I'd like to try OpenSUSE 11.0. I downloaded http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.0-Alpha3/iso/torrent/openSUSE-1... md5sum of the .torrent file is correct according to http://ftp.novell.hu/pub/mirrors/ftp.opensuse.org/opensuse/distribution/11.0... I burned it to a dvd+rw with k3b with verify option. It said the burning was OK! When I booted from the disc, I chose verify media, and it said the media was broken. I tried to burn to another disc, the result was the same. Is it a known bug? Should I continue the installation anyway? TIA. Downloading DVD is a long process for me, so I use only CDs. One of possible problems might be a too fast burning speed. I have seen few times that iso is fine after MD5SUM is checked, but CD failed to install. Lowering the speed to the half of maximum showed in k3b gave good CD. There is many possible reasons and as that happened with Nero's programs too, I would assume that advertised speed of the burner or CD disk is not correct and pits on medium are not deep enough. This is my prime suspect in cases where it burns fine begin of the disc and fails later, and by now lowering speed, sometimes just one step below maximum, worked fine. The same applies for DVDs. -- Regards, Rajko http://en.opensuse.org/Portal needs helpful hands to organize it and maintain. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

There are no "pits" in end-user burned media. Its a dye burning process. But you are correct that lowering the burn speed often helps, especially if your media is dodgy. Remember which brand you purchased if this happens often, and don't buy that brand again. -- ----------JSA--------- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The 'pit' was used for non-reflective surface that is created by heating the surface. Medium can burned (CD-R) or melted (CD-RW), but the effect is that laser has no time to do that properly. Lowering the speed does the trick. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CD_burner I learned that with burner that was advertised as best with Verbatim raw CD media that were a bit 'softer', but at the time not available in local stores. Using that drive with Memorex and lowering speed was solution. -- Regards, Rajko http://en.opensuse.org/Portal needs helpful hands to organize it and maintain. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
