SuSe 7.3, Mutt 1.3.22.1i (2001-08-30)
Mutt newbie here, starting to be a frustrated Mutt newbie. The docs say that Mutt should work "out-of -the-box". Well, mine don't. I installed the one off of the SuSe DVD, which doesn't create me a .muttrc file. So, I went to the Mutt home page, then to the muttrc file generator page and got my initial muttrc file. I have entered my personal data into the file. But, I cannot get mutt to read my mail. In my home directory I have:
/home/jerry/Mail /home/jerry/Mail/inbox /home/jerry/Mail/suse-linux
Here's a snippit from my .muttrc file:
# Folder and Mailbox ###################################################### set write_inc = 10 set sort_browser = alpha set record = "" set pipe_split = no set pipe_decode = no set pipe_sep = "\n" set move = ask-no set mask = "!^\\.[^.]" set mbox = "~/mbox" set mbox_type = mbox set mh_purge = no set confirmappend = yes set confirmcreate = yes set copy = yes set default_hook = "~f %s !~P | (~P ~C %s)" set fcc_attach = yes set fcc_clear = no set folder = "~/Mail" set folder_format = "%2C %t %N %F %2l %-8.8u %-8.8g %8s %d %f" set force_name = no
The problem is, every time I start up Mutt it says: Mutt:-----(no mailbox) No such file or directory
I have downloaded my mail with fetchmail into my suse-linux box. How do I get Mutt to read it?
Thanks for advice, Jerry

OK, when I use your .muttrc file modified for myself, I still get:
/var/mail/jerry is not a mailbox.
It seems that mutt is ignoring all of the pointers to the mail box in the rc
file.

Jerry, if you just use the .bashrc commands I told ya about it will work. You don't need to set it just in the muttrc. I'm not sure where the problem is coming from. I've setup quite a few people with Mutt at work and all I do is add
'MAIL=$HOME/Mail/Incoming' Exactly "where" do I put this line? In the muttrc somewhere? and change every
instance of ben to their username. The three files I sent ya should work. What's the exact error your getting?

Ben,
I received the following suggestion on the mutt-users list:
set spoolfile=~/Mail/inbox
mailboxes ! +suse-linux
After I put these two lines in the rc file, then Mutt opened up my inbox without
any error message. My inbox happens to be empty at the moment so I didn't see
any headers. However, in my Mail dir I also have a suse-linux mailbox into which
I successfully downloaded some mail earlier today. How do I get Mutt to view
that mailbox? In other words, how do I switch mailboxes.

Ok, this is a muttrc file that I use it has only one mailbox setup but it also has some good ideas... It does need to be updated and such.. and if you want to use it you have to make it fit your system but once you get it all running it's very nice... --Roman PS: It's based on GPL so you can do anything you want. That worked Ben. I was able to see the list of mailboxes. When I selected my
suse-linux mailbox and press Enter, Mutt says: "/home/jerry/Mail/suse-linux is
not a mailbox."
Now what?
I created these mailboxes in an xterm as user jerry, by doing "touch
suse-linux", etc.

Could you please be more precise with what remote security exploit in 1.3.22i was? I searched high and low, and got only these: http://www.linuxsecurity.com/advisories/other_advisory-1784.html Mutt in version 1.2.5i has a buffer overflow which can be remotely exploited. Mutt home page (www.mutt.org) mentions: Mutt 1.2.5.1 and 1.3.25 were released on January 1, 2002. These releases both fix a security hole which can be remotely exploited. For more information, see the release announcement. Nothing about security holes in 1.3.22i. 1.3.22i is the latest version available from SuSE. And no security announcemnets. So, what's wrong in mutt 1.3.22i? -Kastus
I hate to follow-up my own message, but... According to http://www.linuxsecurity.com/advisories/suse_advisory-1785.html mutt-1.3.22.1i-105.i386.rpm fixes that security exploit: mutt, a popular mail client for Linux-like systems, is vulnerable to a buffer overflow that is remotely exploitable. We have added patches to the versions of mutt as shipped with the affected distributions to fix the problem. We recommend to install the update package for your product and to restart all running instances of mutt. We thank Joost Pol for reporting the problem to the makers of mutt. So, there is no need to grab mutt 1.3.27i, version 1.3.22.1i from SuSE is safe. -Kastus On Sun, Mar 03, 2002 at 12:26:44AM -0800, Konstantin (Kastus) Shchuka wrote:

That's a question to SuSE: why did the leave the stable 1.2.5 and included development 1.3.22 in 7.3 ? -Kastus
The error message is regarding a missing /var/spool/mail/jerry ( or /var/mail/jerry... whichever your distro prefers. ) to read your suse-linux mailbox explicitly, try: mutt -f =suse-linux /etc/Muttrc should be sufficient as a default muttrc.
