Envelope_from and normal header from.
Hi, I'm thinking about how can I modify my "header from" (the one seen above), while at the same time leaving the "envelope from" intact - as this is the one used by the list software to post mail to the list and allow me in. I was told that mutt can do it - but the mutt interface pisses me: I simply do not know what to do there even to see my mail! q:Quit d:Del u:Undel s:Save m:Mail r:Reply g:Group ?:Help ... ---Mutt: /var/mail/cer [Msgs:0]---(reverse-date/date)-----------------(all)--- I know that mutt is a good program - it has to be. But my firs OS was, I confess, MsDos (and a bit of CP/M and a Vax). I Lent with programs like wordstar 3 and Turbo Pascal, with magnificent user interfaces, so... I'm not too used to spartan or user unfriendly interfaces. O:-) So... any other way to do the trick? I normally use Pine, but I also use sometimes (depending on to whom I write) balsa, kmail, and mozilla/netscape. Is there something that could be changed in postfix to do the trick? An intermediate filter? anything? Is there any "further reading" I could read to learn more about all this? Ideas out there? System is SuSE 8.2, not up full time, no full network connection, but a modem now and then, and no internet domain name. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

In the .muttrc file, set envelope_from=no my_hdr From: Carlos <whatever@dot.com> will get you started.

you just have to get used to it. In any mutt screen, just hit ? to get a list of commands.

Mutt is Pine on steroids ... there is nothing you really cannot do or modify in an email message.. I have used over, now 50 MUAs in the last several years, and always go back to mutt... It is the fastest around and totally customizable.

Unfortunately it's pine :)
I thought Carlos was talking about Mutt... or trying trying the Muttster.. Must have read it too fast... <g> -- Gary Dain bramaged.

I was afraid you would say something like that. X-)

I remember you said so not too long ago :-)

I know it is good. I believe you. So is vi, so is emacs... but they are too much complicated for me O:-) How do I tell it all my emails are under several folders in /home/cer/Mail? Will it matter if some of them are in fact symlinks to somewhere else? I certainly have nothing in /var/mail/cer. There is a lot I have to configure to make it work. Pity it doesn't read pine's config ;-)

X-) Ok, ok, but... without using mutt? :-) Something with postfix, perhaps? -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

Oh no... another vi vs emacs thing... BTW, xemacs makes a great MUA too, and you can change envelope and address senders at will.

All kidding aside, if you have a chance to go to the Mutt site, there may be someone who has a script for a conversion.. I just checked, and it was for the address book only... sorry.

I haven't used Postfix in a very long time... sorry I could not be of more help... -- Gary The beatings will continue until morale improves.

Oh, well... never mind. I'll try to read some docs, and try mutt again, one of those nights. Maybe I'll find something, -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

It looks like pinerc has a customized-hdrs option but it looks like it also also sets the sender from :) I guess 'hdrs' must be an abreviation for 'horrendous', not 'headers'. -- -ckm

<Fire proof overalls on> Anyone know how to do it in Kmail?

What's wrong with kmail? X-) It is a very good program. The only snag -- for me -- is that it uses kde. ;-) But no, if you are asking the same as I'm asking, then, no, I don't know. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

I don't know if you are looking for an MTA change that will work for all of these, or just for pine. For pine, use Roles, under the Setup->Rules->Roles Roles are very powerful, and can even automatically select a role (change the From) for you, depending on who mail is from or going to. I have about 6 roles set in pine right now, for the different domains I receive email at (all to the same inbox).

To change your From: in postfix, see the docs for canonical (man canonical, and also look in /etc/postfix. Carlos, please let me know if this works for you.

Ah, yes, I use roles too; I have forteen (14) O:-)

:-) Ok, but the problem is setting the from header to a "faked" from, whereas at the same time mantaining the correct "envelope header", that is the only one checked by this lists software. Using roles in pine sets both. Or, in fact, you set the normal "from", and Pine sets the envelope from when sending.

Yes; but I think that wouldn't do the trick: | The canonical mapping affects both message header | addresses (i.e. addresses that appear inside messages) and | message envelope addresses (for example, the addresses | that are used in SMTP protocol commands). Think Sendmail | rule set S3, if you like.
