I was just going to ask if there were official 4.2 (final) rpms for SUSE. Of those of you who are running 4.2, are you using a RC, or the final version? If there is a repository for 4.2 final, can you tell me where it is? Rodney Wishart wrote:

I saw that after my last post, but I had to wonder if the KDE 4.2 there is based on a release candidate, as they are labeled "UNSTABLE". Does anyone know if the KDE 4.2 posted there is based on the final (i.e. GM) 4.2 officially released today? When I had opensuse 11.0, I did several KDE 4.x upgrades... all with just a few clicks. It would be nice to do the same here, assuming again that the opensuse sources contain the final/stable version of KDE 4.2, and not a RC or beta. Maybe there isn't a seamless and simple way to simply upgrade 4.1.3 to 4.2 GM (yet), especially without dependency problems. Can anyone comment on this? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes it is. The "stable" repo contains 4.1.3 packages (what is in the current stable distribution), unstable has 4.2 (currently included in what will eventually become the next openSUSE) and factory has the 4.3 pre-alpha builds (which may or may not make it into 11.2, I don't know)

I've done it on my desktop. There are a few packages that went away, and a few that changed names, and a few that were added, so you will get a few manual corrections to make on the update, but it's no major headache Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Here is a copy of a message I posted yesterday in opensuse-factory re 4.2 followed by the response I received to my questions. Both will answer everyone's queries about updating to KDE4.2 QUOTE In anticipation of the release of KDE4.2 Final later today I would like to firstly state what my current situation is re having KDE4.2 RC1 on my system, and also ask a couple of questions. I am running oS 11.1 with KDE4.2RC1 - at least this is what the logon screen suggests when queried; but I am wondering if I *am* running all the correct files necessary for 4.2RC1. I am using the following repositories which I *believe* are the correct ones to have used to have 4.2RC1 on the system for testing (but the naming convention used in the repos is a tad confusing): http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Factory:/Extra-Apps/ope... http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Factory:/Desktop/openSU... http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Community/openSUSE_11.1... I also have these which are used for the original 4.1 installation: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Community/openSUSE_11.1 http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Backports/openSUSE_11.1 My questions are, (1) have I used the correct repositories above (the first 3 in particular) to have 4.2RC1 for testing on my system, and (2) will using these repositories also update my system to KDE4.2 Final when it is released later today? Yes and yes. Just remember a couple of things: 1) kde4:/factory flavour is openSUSE development - so even though the code is officially released and "stable" from a KDE point of view, the packages remain pre-alpha and under active development from the openSUSE point of view. 2) if you don't pay attention (planetsuse.org or -kde mailinglist) kde4:/factory repositories might change to 4.3 beta right under your feet in 2-4 months time - depending on how the 11.2 roadmap turns out, when it's finally published. What has me "confus-ed" (as my late father-in-law used to say [he was Italian]) is that this morning more updates were reported by zypp (or is it zypper?) and when I went to apply them I suddenly (as in yesterday or day before there were none) got a dependency error which I satisfied by not installing compiz-kde-4-0.7.8.24.1. Then I decided to install smart as the system updater (I have it installed on my "test" system" with the identical (naturally) channels (repositories) I have for zypper/zypp/whatever). Not only did smart have any problems with dependencies associated with compiz-kde-4* (above) it installed about a dozen updates - even though zypper/zypp was showing no updates to be done only a minute or so before I ran smart. It's hard to comment without knowing the details of your dependency issues. It could be simply that your first update attempt was in the middle of a sync, and when you tried again it was finished. There were dependency issues when going from 4.1.x to 4.2 (your last update from 4.2RC to 4.2 final was long after that, you must have handled those issues long before) I know that smart at least in the past had issues with 64 bit machines, when the repositories weren't completely in sync and 32 bit packages had higher version numbers, it would suddenly start migrating your system to 32bit, messing everything up in the process. Has that been fixed now? But if you see something in zypper that strikes you as a bug, report it. I am not one to brashly go where noone else has brashly gone before :-) so let me qualify/explain my comment. I updated 2 systems- the first, my "main" system, was done just before 0100 hours (my time) and I posted my msg re 4.2 shortly after this time. My msg stated that it all went smoothly, and I do not remember having any dependency problems. I updated my second, the "test" system, earlier today and with this one I had 2 dependency problems, one had to do with kdebluetooth4 (I am pretty sure, from memory), which I don't use, and another one which I cannot remember. Being my "test" system I accepted the choice of ignoring any unsatisfied dependency/ies with KDE4 because it wouldn't have really mattered if things crashed. Fortunately, I guess, nothing went wrong and this "test" system is running well :-) . I totally accept your warning that dependency problems must be handled properly. My choice to date when they have arisen was to "do not install" the RPM causing the problem. Ciao. -- "I do not instruct the uninterested; I do not help those who fail to try. Didn't even know that such existed. With me, simply placing a "widgie"[1] on the panel automatically creates a space between it and the one(s) next to it. Basil,
You're right about Pulse Audio. For me its a giant PITA!! Anyway, I tried to remove it once when I was in the KDE 4.1.3 stage, and it was a mess. YaST wanted to remove most of my sound/audio packages and I just gave up fighting the dependencies. Has anyone ever come up with exactly which parts of Pulse you can remove and which ones have to stay? And, "PULSE" is a great name for this code, because every time I think about this little gem, the headache I get really dose pulse. :)

Something wrong with all this..... using YaST to remove pulseaudio produces one dependency error which states that something needs pulseaudio and by accepting to uninstall this complaining app all goes well and pulseaudio is uninstalled (oh, one also has to accept that something called esound will be uninstalled as well). No dramas with dependencies as you describe above - at least not here. Ciao. -- "I do not instruct the uninterested; I do not help those who fail to try. Anyone know if there are any apps out there requiring Pulseaudio? Manne -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I removed it without drama, ie. dependency issues. It just improved audio experience. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Just finished my 4.2 upgrade. One thing I noticed right away, the ability to place spacer widgets on the panel have gone are missing. They were really a great help to keep all my icons from being squished to one side. Also, my sound is kinda choppy. I have onboard usb sound and while it was usable in 4.1.3 its even worse in 4.2. Go figure?
There were reports about pulseaudio causing this, e.g. when changing desktops or opening other apps. Further, in case you use gstreamer, install the libxine1 package from packman.
