[opensuse] Ancient laptop display goes black and does not recover (i845 graphics)
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Content-ID: <alpine.LNX.2.00.1308312009350.7832@Telcontar.valinor> Hi, I have an ancient laptop ("Airis GEA N619", with Pentium IV (32 bit), 512 MiB ram, 80 GB HD), running openSUSE 12.3. The screen goes dark after some time both in text mode and X mode (graphics). I think it powers down the display. When this happens, I don't know how to wake it up. The laptop is active, I work on it via ssh, and it is running fine - but no display. I can blind type on it, too (if I know which terminal has a free prompt) In X I might be able to configure out DPMS. But text mode? I've never heard how to configure that in text mode. :-? Or any command to force the display to wake up? I tried the blue keys (Fn) on the laptop. No go. Actually one of them kills the machine further, it goes to sleep and it has no battery (guess). Video is "Intel Corporation i845" from "Uniwill Computer Corp". The doc says "Intel® Extreme Graphics". Display has no EDID info. In your problem description, hwinfo said kernel driver "i915" modalias pci:v00008086d00002562sv*sd*bc03sc*i* also matches with your device pci:v00008086d00002562sv00001584sd00009000bc03sc00i00. I expect so. I wouldn't be surprised if most workarounds for i915 troubles are necessitated at least in part by the derelict 845G. If it doesn't, try what I do by default (nice to know whether it works or not): In ~/.bashrc setterm -blank 59 -store Somewhere in /etc/xorg.co* I also do: Option "DPS" "off" Then again, I'm not a laptop user, except for one infrequently used antique with r128. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." I'll try on next reboot.
If it doesn't, try what I do by default (nice to know whether it works or not):
In ~/.bashrc
setterm -blank 59 -store
Ah, that was the setting for text mode. I had forgotten that command. The manual says that APM is used if available. I tried "setterm -blank poke", no go. The thing is, I certainly prefer the display to be off, since this machine I handle via ssh and leave it running to download big things, with main computer off. Display off saves some power on the ancient power supply, and spares the probably old fluorescent tubes that light it up. But the thing does not recover! :-(
Somewhere in /etc/xorg.co* I also do:
Option "DPS" "off"
Yes, that one I knew. It should be DPMS, though.
Then again, I'm not a laptop user, except for one infrequently used antique with r128.

I don't get much chance to "forget". One of first things I do on fresh install or user creation is save the initial one, then copy a .bashrc template that includes it to $HOME.
The manual says that APM is used if available. I tried "setterm -blank poke", no go.

With any luck, simply using setterm may be a workaround for the failure to recover. s/59/1/ may be enough, while still saving power by blanking quickly. You should only need to log in on an unused vtty rather than rebooting to find out if it helps.
Somewhere in /etc/xorg.co* I also do:

Blanking alone does not save power unless the backligth is also powered off. I created "/etc/profile.local" with this content: setterm -blank 10 -store setterm -powerdown 0 echo "Terminal setterm done." Besides that, I turn the brightness down with the laptop function keys. Will see if it does not block again. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. That code runs, but it is useless. Display went blank, and when I noticed and pressed a key, doesn't respond. I mean, it does not light up, the thing is working via ssh correctly. :-( I'll add "setterm -powersave off, setterm -blank 0 -store", but I don't have much hope. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. I rebooted the machine, and after some hours I noticed the display did not respond. I confirm via ssh in syslog that the kernel line is correct: 2013-09-07T16:41:14.816102+02:00 AmonLanc kernel: [ 0.000000] Kernel command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.7.10-1.16-default root=UUID=c538c7a3-97ea-4eae-91fc-fdfea0fc1aca resume=/dev/disk/by-label/Swap showopts splash=verbose loglevel=3 console=tty1 vga=791 i915.powersave=0 So, it does not make effect, or not always. It is a nuisance, but mostly I'm handling that laptop remotely, via ssh, so it is not a big-big deal. Maybe if I need the display one day I'll try placing a dead weight in the shift key, after boot ;-) - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R.
