Years ago I was using Suse 6.2 for a while. I remember there was something that you could do which would save all the installed packages and settings that you entered in during the installation to a floppy disk, and that you could use that floppy disk for an automated installation if you ever needed it again. Is that still around? How do I find it? -- <stu> you should be afraid to use KDE because RMS might come to your house and cleave your monitor with an axe or something :)

What you are looking for has grown to AutoYaST
How do I find it?

Is this a part of YAST or a seperate application? I was hoping to be able to capture all the packages on an installation and save it for later. I'm playing with distributions and would like to keep a record of what I installed on it in case I want to go back. -- Marriage is a great institution -- but I'm not ready for an institution yet. -- Mae West

AutoYaST is a separate package but integrated with YaST

There is a backup in YaST which writes all changed files from all installed packages plus all other files not belonging to any packages from locations you specify ans also creates a configuration file usable from AutoYaST. That backup can be restored from YaST (if your system is still usable) or can be used in AutoYaST to recreate your system from scratch. Regards, -Kastus

There is a function on the software selection screen to save the selections to a floppy or a file. Click on 'FILE' in the upper left of the screen and you will find the function.

In SuSE 8.1, Yast has a backup section. One of the options is to create an auto install file, autoinst.xml, just for that purpose. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

I didn't see this in Suse 8.2, which is what led to my question. Did Suse take it out?

I'll check when I get 8.2, which I'm sharing with a friend (and he got it first) - but any way, in 8.1 is inside the backup part, and not at the begining of the process. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
