[opensuse] kprinter for KDE4 in openSUSE 13.1, 13.2
Hello: As KDE3 user I frequently used kprinter, especially when scanning documents I could save them very easily by printing as pdf through kprinter. Is there kprinter or some similar powerful thing in KDE4? When clicking to print management in the menus it redirects to CUPS in a browser window (which is kind of ridiculous, is should say instead simply CUPS print manager). Thanks, but the two things are different . Haven't you ever used kprinter or kde print manager in KDE3 before KDE4 era? Kprint is a very powerful tool. You can set applications to send print jobs to kprinter and then in kprinter you can easily choose from preconfigured setups to print the pages. You can easily set the destination (pdf file, ps file, CUPS, lpr), easily set the page format and size (a4, a5 etc, portrait, landscape) and you can even have a preview before the final print. For example in firefox 2 you could set the browser to send the print job to kprinter. In firefox 3 they had changed the whole print management system and since that it has not been an option. That is you had to print to pdf using firefox's own print 'module' where you had to set the output type, the directory where you wanted to save the file, and write the file name every time, because it could not remember them and you could not even select an existing file name and modify it. (These issues lasted for several years because firefox developers were busy with changing major version numbers and constantly changing the place of buttons and menu items instead of fixing real problems and bugs. Anyway, I just want to say that KDE3 print management system and kprinter program were/are very useful and powerful tools. It seems that KDE4 does not offer these tools. It's a pity. nope. You have the same module in firefox and gimp... and you have many option (less for printing to file, more for printer) essentially the same as before jdd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

kprinter for KDE4 is available at https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/home:steffens:lvermgeo:client/kprint... . On KDE 4.14.3, one may also use the "Manage print jobs" plasmoid instead of the CUPS configuration page. -- Regards, Peter -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Peter, thanks for the link. Unfortunately when I asked about kprint I forgot to mention I meant kde print manager and kprint together. I installed kprint4 in openSUSE 13.2 but don't see how can I use it. If I try in a konsolse window it does not do anything (in kde3 it opens the kprint window where I can set printing):
kprinter kprinter4(4226) main: "Wait for STDIN..."
As for the plasmoid: I have to confess I don't know what this term indicates. Is plasmoid a thing which always occupies an area on the desktop? Or can I make it visible only when I wan to manage my printing? Thanks, Istvan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

In openSSUE 13.1, not 13.2 if it does matter. Sorry. Istvan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

a right clic on the desktop gives you an option to install graphical components (second option from the top), these are the "plasmoids" (kde4 vocabulary, not the best they have done :-() look for print. You get a printer icon on the desktop or on the taskbar. This is the complete print manager (I just discover as it's installed by default) as an old timer, I'm accustomed to use localhost:631, so I often miss new stuff :-) jdd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Regardless of what application I am using, firefox, Thunderbird, I just right click or use the menus to select print, then select print to file, it defaults to pdf, I click ok and and its done, a pdf is generated. I' just don't see what the difference is between that, and what you are asking for. Its all built into the standard print dialog, and it works from just about any app. -- After all is said and done, more is said than done. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
