Yesterday, my machine was a rude pc chips m598lmr, with a k6-ii/500mhz (no comments please). Today I build a new one with a gigabyte k8vm800, to a sempron 2800+ 64-bit (no comments please) they are economics pcs. How could I reconfigurate my distros (SuSE 9.3 and Slackware 10.1) without a reinstalation? Thanks for any help. a. PS--I know there are SuSE 10 and Slackware 10.2 :)

I'm building a new box also... Can I ask why you chose those items? (I hear the gigabyte motherboards are good, and the 64-bit 2800+ is a decent chip, but I don't have anything to compare it to personally) I'm looking for something with onboard 10/100/1000 nic, at least 4 PCI slots, and at least 3 gig ram max. I'm not sure how much the 64 bit would help a file server... By their site, they only have two Linux boards.

I bought it to edit digital images (nikon 5200), capture movies from my camcorder (canon zr-85) and play newer games like fifa 05/06 -- it coincided with the "dead" of my sisters-in-law's box (pcchips 810, duron 800). suse_gasjr4wd@mac.com escreveu:

Personally, I prefer MSI, Gigabyte or Abit instead Asus, pc chips, ECS, etc. As I found a Gigabyte model (K8VM800M) with video and sound chipset on-board (it also has an AGP slot, of course) at my city with a good price, I didn't exitate and bought it: i) it is cheaper than celeron ii) the chipset inside is from VIA (I think it's better than SiS and not so expensive as nVidia) iii) it has compatibility with my elected processor, AMD Sempron 2800+, 1.6GHz, with 256Kb Cache L2, stepping E6 (OPN BX, this means you are sure that you have 64-bit activated resources), etc. http://www.amdcompare.com/us-en/desktop/details.aspx?opn=SDA2800AIO3BX http://www.giga-byte.com/Motherboard/Support/CPUSupportList/CPUSupportList_G... ...you can compare it with another Sempron processors: http://www.amdcompare.com/us-en/desktop/ ...or you can see benchmarks http://www.amd.com/br-pt/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_118_11599_11605... iv) it is on the list "recommended motherboards" to sempron from AMD's website: http://www2.amd.com/br-pt/Processors/TechnicalResources/1,,30_182_869_11521%... http://www2.amd.com/br-pt/recmobo/ResultsHandler/1,,30_182_869_11521%5E11522... v) you can compare it with another motherboards to socket 754 at: http://www.dealtime.com http://www.tigerdirect.com ...or even with via chipset-based motheboards. There you can choice your motherboard -- they will tell you how much slots the mobos have. Slackware 10.1 supports it: it is just working fine, video, sound, everything. SuSE is nomore running well. I will follow the advises of Felix Miata and Hans du Plooy. Adagilson

AFAIK, if your new machine is only using PATA for your HD(s) using the same device position(s) on the controller(s), you should be able to simply boot into runlevel 3 on SuSE, run sax2 to configure for your new video, then init 5 & run like nothing was ever messed with. I've never used slack, but it must have some similar utility for video reconfiguration, or you could manually change its xorg.conf file with your new video as sax2 did for your SuSE. -- "Be quick to listen, slow to speak." I'm puzzled why you say 'no comments'? There is nothing wrong with those PC's. One of mine is also a K6 II 500mhz. That's the beauty of Linux, it will run on older PC's that would otherwise be thrown out. Don't be embarrased or ashamed, you are saving the world's resources by utilising old computers. Thank you very much for your answer, Kevan! I enjoy it and I am more prouded of my machines now :) Adagilson PS--it's not so unusual that people criticise our options instead just answering the questions posted. BTW I loved my K6-II and it's still alive on the hands of my sisters-in-law -- you see, there's life after the death: donate organs ;) Kevanf1 escreveu:

As I said, everything is working fine on Skackware 10.1. It can find all partittion on my primary master, as before. I know there are new motherboard and processor, but if my HD is in the same place, Slackware can boot and mout all partition of it as before, why could not SuSE 9.3? with a k6-ii/500mhz (no comments please). Decent chip, if you put it on a decent board. To the best of my knowledge there were only ever two really good boards for this chip - a Gigabyte and an ASUS, both based on an ALi chipset.
Today I build a new one with a gigabyte k8vm800, to a sempron 2800+ 64-bit (no comments please) Why not? That is an excellent combo. I got that combo (2600+ though) for my dad, and it impressed me so much I got the exact same combo for our new mailserver. I installed SUSE 9.3 Pro on it just to see what it's like (with 512mb mem) and it really moved.
they are economics pcs. H True. I cannot see how anyone can justify buying a Celeron if you can get this for the same money.

I assume you're keeping your hard drive as it is. Just put it on the same port (Primary master, say, or where ever you had it), add a 3 to the boot options line to boot into runlevel 3, and run yast to configure your network controller, sound, and what ever else you replaced. SUSE is really robust like that. Hans
