Problems with an Install Please Help me so I can get rid of Windows
Hi All, I decided to bite the bullet yesterday, I am sick of having problems with Win and I thought I would have no problems installng SUSE 7.1. I was planning on changing in 3 weeks time but decided to bite the bullet and go early I have an IBM A 20 laptop 64M ram, 11 G Hard Disk, and a great screen, this laptop is my business machine so I can not afford to have it off the air for more than a day. I was able to install linux with no problems, it took a long time to install the software as I asked it to install a lot of extras. The install process went rather well it recognised my printer a Cannon BJC 6000 after it had finished the install. I had to shutdown the machine and I did it using the shutdown command on the logon window instead of turning off the power, the shutdown turned of the power to the machine as well. On reboot whist Yast and Yast 2 were trying to configure the modem I thought it was a good time to start using the tools in Linux I started playing with Kword, and tried to print, it did not have any printers installed, even though during the install process it detected the printer correctly. I tried using Yast and Yast 2 to re-configure/re-install the printer but I received a warning message that the printer was not setup properly. The message told me that Linux could not see the printer. I have temporaily removed Linux from my system, Windows can see and use the printer so the printer is working. I was initailly hoping to use my WinModem but after reading the list for some time decided that configuring it was beyond my current level of expertise, so I purchased yesterday a 56K V.90 External voice/fax/data modem. My winmodem was still trying to use IRQ 11 however Using Yast I tried to get the system to find the modem by looking on the Modem file under devices then tty0-3 I tried to use wvdial to connect to the internet and then I was going to configure Kmail to receive my email from my ISP, The modem and Printer are all I need to be happy using Linux and to allow for me to finally get rid of windows. I would appreciate any help anyone out there can be to me. Thanks in advance for your help and advise on this. I am hoping that this change back to Windows is a Tempoary thing, It will allow for me to convert some files however. Shane Broomhall shanebroomhall@computer.org
Hello Shane, There should be some help for these problems on Linuxcare's site. Try http://www.linuxcare.com/labs/ They probably haven't evaluated the systems for SuSE 7.1 yet. See what you can find from their certifications under SuSE 7.0.
I was initailly hoping to use my WinModem but after reading the list for some time decided that configuring it was beyond my current level of expertise, so I purchased yesterday a 56K V.90 External voice/fax/data modem. My winmodem was still trying to use IRQ 11 however
If I recall correctly, there is a driver for the winmodems in these machines. It may not yet be publicly available.
Using Yast I tried to get the system to find the modem by looking on the Modem file under devices then tty0-3 I tried to use wvdial to connect to the internet and then I was going to configure Kmail to receive my email from my ISP,
Try wvdialconf.
The modem and Printer are all I need to be happy using Linux and to allow for me to finally get rid of windows.
What kind of a printer do you have? There are a few out there which don't work under Linux. -- David Benfell benfell@parts-unknown.org --- Resume available at http://www.parts-unknown.org/resume.html
