Desperately Seeking Kernel 2.4.3 Help
My distro. is Suse 7.0 1. Modem Does Not Function After Upgrade to Kernel 2.4.3 From 2.2.16 I have received advice from the group that I need to upgrade my kernel ppp. I have d/l'ed the latest ppp.rpm from this address--- ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/7.1/suse/n1/ppp.rpm. I intalled it but modem still will not work. When I installed the new ppp.rpm I received error messages saying it conflicted with the old one. Do I need to uninstall the old ppp? How did the old ppp show up in the new kernel, anyway? 2. Floppy Diskette Will Not Mount After Upgrade to Kernel 2.4.3 I have tried many different options in kernel configuration that might relate to using the floppy diskette drive, but still no go. I continue to get the same error every time I try "mount /floppy"------ /dev/fd0 has wrong major or minor number. I was experiencing the same problem trying to mount the cdrom drive, but something I chose in kernel config. fixed the problem. I can't find anything similar for the floppy drive problem. 3. No Sound Since Upgrade to Kernel 2.4.3 My SB Live is recognized under Yast. No problems there. The proper driver for the SB Live loads upon booting the kernel. The cdrom drive can read data from CD's; however, when I try to play an audio CD, not a peep of sound comes out of the soundcard jacks. Thank you for your time and help. Mike michael.flug@snet.net

Are you using the SuSe kernel from an RPM? or did you DL the sources and
build your own? AFAIK the SuSE update was only to 2.4.2 and this kernel has
all the default switches thrown in the .config. I would recomend that you
grab this kernel and be sure that you have the modutils package installed
for 2.4? You should also be sure that depmod -a is run.

That doesn't work either. There is no excuse that SUSE is having with
normal upgrades of the kernel.
The major problem is that 7.0 came out with a SYS INIT system incompatible
with the 2.4 kernel. It's working with the kernel dameon for the 2.4 tree
from 7.0 was completely disfunctional. It leaves you with little practcle
choice but to run out and buy 7.1, and even that fails without some happy
hacking of the sys init system which is completely replaces without regard
to current changes in the system by the user.
As for kickers, X for the vodoo3 X system which NEVER worked under SUSE,
replaced the working version of the System with their disfunctional system.
It's a lousey job by SuSe all around in this regaurd, especially in light
of the need to upgrade to a new kernel after insecurities showed up in
version 2.2.18

Please? That'd be the first time I've heard of it. What specifically do you mean?
It's working with the kernel dameon for the 2.4 tree from 7.0 was completely disfunctional.
Which one of the many kernel daemons do you mean? Again, please be precise.

Stated as that it's simply not true. And again, please be more specific and I might be able to answer.

Please? So you dislike that we react to security bugs once they are discovered? You can't be serious!

I'll try. But I need detailed descriptions/questions in order to reply sensibly. Philipp -- Penguins to save the dinosaurs -- Handelsblatt on Linux for S/390
