USB CompacFlash Card Reader Woes
I have a USB hotplug Compact Flash Reader from RCA. The CompactFlash Card is in the Reader. I cannot find the drive on my machine though and do not know what to do. I do see the following in Yast 2 under Hardware->Hardware Information->USB: SCM Micro USBAT-02: Bus:USB Class (spec): Unclassified device Class: Unclassified device Device (spec):SCM Micro USBAT-02 Device:USBAT-2 CompactFlash Card Reader Device identifier:200720 [....] hotplug:usb My question is this: Where the heck is the CompactFlash Card Reader in the system's filesystem? I can't find it, am not sure how to mount and access it, etc. What's particularly upsetting is I've had no trouble getting a USB Flash Disk working. I have a memory stick working perfectly via hotplug. Under the same section in Yast 2, I see: Flash Disk: Bus:SCSI Class (spec):Disk Class:Mass Storage Device Device:Flash Disk Device Name:/dev/sda [....] driver:usb-storage hotplug:usb I do not have a clue what the heck is wrong. I am particularly bothered that no "Device Name" or "driver" is listed for the Compact Flash Reader. I tried to add an entry to /etc/fstab to no avail. I tried to mount . Again, no luck. -- Cheers, wmeler __________________ SuSE 8.1 Professional -- kernel 2.4.21 KDE 3.2.2 Dell PowerEdge 400SC P4 w/Hyperthreading 128 MB ECC SDRAM 40 GB & 200 GB hard drives CD-ROM and CD-RW 6 USB 2.0 ports

// cut Don't you see it under /media ??? I think that's where it should be. Cheers, -- Jan Elders the Netherlands http://www.xs4all.nl/~jrme/ "Home of the Network Acronyms"

Flash Disk: Bus:SCSI Class (spec):Disk Class:Mass Storage Device Device:Flash Disk Device Name:/dev/sda [....] driver:usb-storage hotplug:usb This actually is different depending on what kernel you are using. If you are using SuSE 9.2, then the device will be automatically mounted when you insert the flash into the drive. Normally, the device will be /dev/sda1. On SuSE 9.2, when you insert the flash it should pop up knoqueror. Or you can check the mount (this example is my micro drive: gaf@sauron:~/benchmark.results/povray> mount <snip> /dev/sda1 on /media/usb-SNDKAAC6C4394E800604:0:0:0p1 type subfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,sync,procuid,iocharset=utf8)
On earlier releases, you may need to issue the mount command yourself:
1. as root: mkdir -p /media/myflash
2. mount /dev/sda1 /media/myflash

Thanks. To answer the questions posed, I already have devices that
are sda1 and sdb1, so I thought it would be sdc1. I cannot find it
anywhere, and there is nothing interestign under /media. I tried to
mount it via /etc/fstab but didn't try the options you provided.
My understanding is that I should be able to find this device via
/proc/usb somehow, but I don't know.
Also, it is pretty apparent to me that it's not assigned a device,
since the USB Flash Disk I mentioned comes up as /dev/sda in Yast 2,
but the CompactFlash Reader does not. Also, I think the driver is
missing. I am hoping someone can explain to me how to fix this. I
found the driver (I think) at:
http://usbat2.sourceforge.net/
