I'll confirm that this works. I used /opt/gnome/bin/gnome-default-applications-properties and set custom mail reader to "thunderbird %s". My Firefox about:config has no mail handler variable.

Thanks! That did it. I'm not familiar with GNOME, and though the original suggestion meant to go to the gui control center in GNOME and find the settings there, but as far as I can tell, on my system it doesn't show up there. But typing gnome-default-applications-properties on the command land did bring up the preferred applications setting gui and it solved the problem. Thanks again to all who responded! Bernie
