OK, I just got a Creative Labs MuVo and managed to figure out (to an extent) how to put files on it. Now to advance. How do I make an mp3? I know I can download them, but I want to make some of my own. Tom P.S. RIAA - If you're listening...bite me!

You need to rip the tracks from the CD, using cdda2wav or cdparanoia or similar. Then you convert the resulting wav files to mp3 or ogg with lame or similar. Grip is a nice tool that does all this for you. -- Andre Truter Software Engineer Registered Linux user #185282 ICQ #40935899 AIM: trusoftzaf http://www.trusoft.za.net ----------------- < A dinosaur is a salamander designed to Mil spec >
Some of the programs that burn CD's also allow you to "record" songs from CD
to mp3 format.
I haven't used yet but I saw that under KDE the cd burn program does it,
there should be many programs.

Lol, I like the sig!. I have used many of the programs on Linux, but the one that seems to work the best is the front end program "grip" - the gnome ripper. I will both rip and then encode the wav files to mp3, and IIRC ogg as well. I don't get it....its a fact that the classical music industry has always grasped the concept of newer technology before anyone ever does. The pop music industry bad-mouthed the cassette tape, the CD, and now mp3. It's going to be a matter of time before they get on it themself. Sorry, it's late and I'm feeling pissy. Anyway, will using grip be pretty self explanatory? I'm not sure if I'll have time to play with it since I'm heading to Hawaii on Friday. I imagine I just drop a CD in, select the tracks, and convert them with the bit rate I want. Am I even close? Thanks, Tom On Thursday 19 June 2003 1:16 am, Curtis Rey wrote:

Maybe even faster than grip, use Konqueror. F9 Click the "services" icon, AudioCD browser > mp3 That's it fx -- ______________________ Courtesy of SuSE Linux http://www.nibz.org

I would suggest Grip before Konqueror. The reason being that there is no way to use lame's --preset/--alt-preset for mp3 and oggenc's -q setting for Ogg Vorbis. Charles -- There are no threads in a.b.p.erotica, so there's no gain in using a threaded news reader. (Unknown source)

Grip is pretty painless. You bring up grip, pop in the cd (of vice verse). then on the right side of the song listed in the first window you just click. You'll see a check which means you've designated that for rip. Also take a look at the config. If you see certain things like cdparanoia - oh, and I would highly recommend getiting lame - it's pretty much essential. SuSE doesn't enclude it, but sourceforge has it, or do a goggle for lame. if any thing is missing install them for the SuSE disk otherwise. A note about lame, if you can't find the rpm and only the tarball then do a ./configure, make and then instead of make install do "checkconfig". This is also on the SuSE disk (if you were not aware of it), it installs and converts to rpm so the data base is up to speed and then it much easier to uninstall something later. Just give it a look. Another option, easier to use from the get go, but sometimes slower and occasionally not as reliabel it Konquerors I/O slave Just type "audiocd:/" and should be good to go, There is also a help file for this as well, and a couple of articles on the SBD. Just to minimize confusion, that is "checkinstall" not "checkconfig" in the 3rd line above. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org

I know I can download them, but I want to make some of my own.
You can use grip or Konqueror's Audio CD slave AFTER you install an mp3 encoder. I would recommend lame, which IMHO probably the best. I have an rpm compiled for 8.2 if you would like it emailed to you (~616K). Then, using Konqueror's Audio CD slave, just go to the mp3 tab, select your file, and copy it to your destination, which will rip it to mp3 (quite fast as well). Is there a provision to do this using Konq. & Org.....MUCH better than MP3. Fred -- Fred A. Miller Systems Administrator Cornell Univ. Press Services fm@cupserv.org, www.cupserv.org
