Hi Can anybody give me some pointers as to how to get a cable modem up and running under SuSE 8.1 I've looked at the support database at suse but I could only find half a page and it didn't work. The modem is an Ambit USB cable modem supplied through NTL. It's an always on connection so when I tried to configure it through yast I haven't got a phone number to supply YAST. Any help would be much appriciated.
Paul, You should attach the network cable from the cable modem to your computer. You should configure your system network interface Card to DHCP unless your ISP gave you a static IP. Once you do that, reboot and you should be in business. Abraham paul harrowsmith wrote:

I have a cable modem, also from NTL, and didn't need to do anything to set it up. Mine is connected via ethernet - is yours ethernet or USB?

Sounds like you're trying to configure the "modem" section. This isn't needed for the cable modems (despite the name). Because it's an always-on connection, think of it as a network connection, not a modem. I have no modem set up. The cable modem is signalled to SuSE by setting the main network card (eth0 in my case) as a DHCP connection, and everything works fine. Can you access the cable modem from e.g. mozilla? Mine provides an information page at 192.168.100.1 - can you access that on yours? If the modem is a usb modem then you need to set up some kind of USB netowrk device as eth0. Have you configured your USB to be a network card? See if the network config autodetects it. Abraham paul harrowsmith wrote:

AFAIK, NTL cable modems still come with both USB and ethernet connections. My advice would be to buy a cheap network card (only about 12 pounds) and use that. Very easy to set up and much better than using USB. Sean Akers.
Hi all Just to say I decided to install a network card and all my problems have disappeared. Thanks Paul H
