Ok, A few weeks ago I posted a message to this list about a hard drive problem. Thanks to the response I got, I went out and purchased a nice nifty new hard drive, and then reinstalled SuSE. I've got all of the updates and everything else in the system. Oddly enough though, I've got a new "problem". It doesn't seem too serious, it's just annoying and I don't understand it at all. After the laptop has been on for more than 30 minutes or so, it starts beeping. The beeps seem to be intermittent and don't seem to have ANY bearing on what I'm doing at that moment. This has never happened before. The only hardware I've upgraded is from a 4200 rpm laptop drive to a 5400 rpm drive (same size). It seems to be running great. The system recognized it on the first try (after I figured out how to reconnect the silly thing). YaST didn't see any problem with it at all, and the system seems 100% stable. My fans are coming on and off like always, and everything else "seems fine". Any ideas? Thanks in Advance...........

Check your system temp. Could be the new drive is running hotter than the old. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

I have decided it must be the drive's fault. I can't seem to get lm_sensors working properly, thus, I can't actually find out what temperature I'm running. I'm going to look on the Toshiba website to see if there is a BIOS update that will help the fan run more. I can't help but wonder, if it's getting hot, why isn't the fan running more? It doesn't seem to be...although this is hardly a scientifically deduced conclusion. Now for part two of my question. Sometimes after beeping, the hard drive definitely makes some noise. I assume the computer wants to run cooler, but I don't want to go out and buy another drive. Is this going to fry my sysyem...or is there some other way to sweet talk this thing into running cooler? thnx On Saturday 06 September 2003 4:47 pm, John Andersen wrote:

Andy you might want to invest 20 bucks or so in a Laptop cooler. A cheaper route to go would be to get a piece of aluminum and some plastic feet/spacers and place your laptop on that so it has some air flow under it. May be enough to cool the thing down to something tolerable. the laptop coolers are not much more than that with an added fan or two moving the air around. HTH Richard

Andy, get rid of the drive NOW while its still under warranty. Whats this "noise" after the beep? This could be something bad. Have you tailed your logs to see if anything happens after this beep? Really, take it back. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

If it is the HD running hot, the CPU fan will not cool it. And, if the intake air to the CPU flows first around the HD, then the CPU will also be hotter. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

Perhaps something on the USB or PCMCIA, or something like that. It would show in /var/log/messages. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
