[opensuse] Frequent hangs in 11.3 + 4.5 continue
There was some discussion in the past few weeks about frequent freezes of the mouse and keyboard. See thread "This guy _really_ likes kde 4.5". I have tried various changes of kernel, and am now back on 2.6.34.7-0.3. I have also upgraded dbus to 1.4, but the problems continue unchanged. If anyone else who experienced the same problems found a solution, I would be grateful for a pointer. The mouse and keyboard hangs aren't dbus related - the dbus threading issue just makes the app itself freeze. I would see if you can reproduce the hangs with a new user account. If you can't, start adding apps that you usually use in your normal user account until the behaviour manifests. If it does appear with the new user, I tend to suspect an unlucky constellation of kernel and nvidia driver. Try a different nvidia driver if possible. FWIW in the earlier thread I noticed that you use Yakuake. This does use the 3D hardware to do its translucency effect. We had some USB related mouse/keyboard hangs fixed with the lastr kernel update. However, I have got shown a PS/2 (builtin trackball) hang today. We migth have a bug in the kernel regarding them :/ Ciao, Marcus -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks, Will. I tried starting all my usual apps in a new user account, but couldn't get the undesired behaviour to repeat itself. This includes yakuake, gkrellm, basket notes, amarok, kontact and firefox. I had thought I was suffering from bug #638200, but this is marked as fixed. I'm inclined to agree (with my limited knowledge) that it's a graphics driver problem. Is there a quick and dirty how-to which would guide me through switching from the nvidia proprietary drivers to the nouveau driver? Uninstalling the nvidia driver in YaST left me with no graphics at all. The nouveau driver appears to be installed, I just have to get it to function. Or maybe it's the nouveau driver that's causing the problem? I've read the wiki entry on nvidia graphics problems, but I'm hesitant to edit xorg.conf if that's not the cause. You logged in as a new user and didn't have the problems you see in your account and you still think it's a driver issue? Think again, it has to be a errant config setting in your user login. If it were a driver issue it would affect any user that logged in. -- Ken Schneider SuSe since Version 5.2, June 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

That assumes any user's config triggers the driver problem. That notwithstanding: Bob, just a thought - you don't have any slideshow Frame applets displaying large images do you? I accidentally pointed 4.3's Frame at a folder of 18MP images once and the huge pixmaps sent to my weedy graphics card caused the X server to hang up for a second or two whenever the image changed. Haven't checked to see if it still occurs though. Will -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

No slideshows. Big images only get opened in Digikam or Gimp, and they're not running unless needed. I have two monitors, running in twinhead mode, displaying 8 desktops with effects such as rotating desktop cube active. I've tried switching off effects, without it making any difference, but I'll try again now ... ... nope, still getting freezes, associated with activity spikes visible in gkrellm, usually in the fourth core, but sometimes others. I doubt this is relevant in your case but I have experienced OpenGL applications freezing the computer for 5-10 seconds. This is with NVIDIA 9600 on an intel dual core equipped desk top running 11.3. However in this case I could trace the problems to the preload module. I have not experienced the same problem on my little intel equipped netbook also running 11.3 + KDE4.5. After removing preload the computer is running fine. It looks as if there is some kind of race condition so that the computer randomly starts all right, but mostly not, using preload. Ulf, That sounds interesting, and worth a try, given the similarities between our systems. Could you give me some guidance on how to remove the preload module, please? And how to re-enable it if it turns out not to be the culprit. Many thanks. Bob, I merely renamed preloadtrace.ko (search in lib/modules/...) to something else. But the proper way would of course be to change the init script. I usually compile my own kernel so this problem only surfaced while testing the opensuse kernel.
