Re: [SLE] Installed XFree 4.0.3, then lost KDM

and if you type "init 5" as root, what happens?
Nada. It comes right back with the next command line prompt (all this in console mode) and no visible effect whatsoever. And here's some more interesting command-line output: root@suillus:/aux/home/pwa > /etc/init.d/xdm status Checking for service kdm: is NOT running root@suillus:/aux/home/pwa > /etc/init.d/xdm restart Shutting down service kdm done Starting service kdm done root@suillus:/aux/home/pwa > ps -A | grep kdm root@suillus:/aux/home/pwa > /etc/init.d/xdm status Checking for service kdm: is NOT running root@suillus:/aux/home/pwa > Paul Abrahams
Another interesting discovery: if I choose GDM as my login manager, I get the graphical interface, even though I don't get it with XDM or KDM. I wonder if the problem could be Nvidia-related (I have one of those)? I did a SAX reconfiguration after installing XFree86 4.0.3 but didn't change the old settings as far as I know. I'm using the nv driver. Paul Abrahams
Did you post your suse version? I have problems with KDE 2.1.x under 7.0. The order on which you install the RPMs or what RPMs you install results in a non-functional KDE. The first time I installed it I used yast to update KDE going through the update dirs in alphabetical order. When starting kdm I would get some missing library error. Someone suggested an order to the update. I followed it and this time installed everything, including devel packages. This time KDM started but once you enter a session the fonts are all garbled. I left it at that, I will get back to that machine and try to figure out what's wrong. You should try to start kdm through the command line. If you are under 7.0 use 'init 2', if under 7.1 use 'init 3' to get to the console. At the prompt, as root, type '/opt/kde2/bin/kdm' and see what if any error messages you get. Paul Abrahams wrote:

I don't think is a video driver problem. -- Rafael

I'm running SuSE 7.1. KDE itself seems to be running fine; it's only KDM that doesn't work. I believe it's possible to use KDM without using anything else from KDE, and it's certainly possible to use KDE without KDM (I'm doing that at this very moment, out of necessity).
You should try to start kdm through the command line. If you are under 7.0 use 'init 2', if under 7.1 use 'init 3' to get to the console. At the prompt, as root, type '/opt/kde2/bin/kdm' and see what if any error messages you get.
I tried that and got an immediate return with no messages of any kind. I believe that /etc/init.d/xdm does the same thing. Paul Abrahams
OK, I now have an explanation but not an answer of what is going on. Both of the following: xdm -debug=1 kdm -nodaemon produced this error message: error while loading shared libs: undefined symbol: XdmcpWrapperToOddParity So the NVidia angle was misleading. But the question remains: what shared library am I missing, and where can I retrieve it? I installed XFree 4.0.3 using the Xinstall.sh script; could that be the problem? Paul Abrahams
