[opensuse] Speaking of KDE3...
How do I go back to KDE 3? Right now I am using 11.2 and KDE 4. I would really like to get rid of 4 so I can be fully functional in an environment I can understand. Thank you, Phil -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hello Phil. You can simply install all the KDE 3 packages as desired (I believe there's a meta package that installs all the base stuff for kde3). After that you can simply choose kde 3 from the WM menu in kdm. Don't bother with installing kde 3 version of KDM. The kde 4 version will work fine, besides changing the kdm version is a PITA (I mean sheesh, changing the login screen/theme in kde4 is a PITA). I really really don't understand the KDE dev team leadership. I can understand new things and all that but this goes way beyond ambitious to the point of somebody's absurd ego trip or some other singular slant on reality. Anyway, kde 3 works as you would expect and there are new mirrors as well. Seems that people aren't quit ready to give up the Version 3 ghost and have taken it upon themselves to keep the version current (bug/security fixes) after KDE dev drop it. HTH, Curtis. -- BEWARE! Thank you Curtis--my sentiments exactly! I went to YAST/add repo and did not see anything related to KDE 3. Do you know where i can find the repo? Thanks, Phil -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks,
Phil Here are the basic links to SuSE kde 3 repos:
kde community http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Community/openSUSE_11.2 kde core http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE3/openSUSE_11.2/ kde backports http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Backports/openSUSE_11.2/ There are others and soon to be added independent kde v3 repo to maintain it after discontinuance of v3 support. Tool around the openSUSE site - they're there. HTH, Curtis. -- BEWARE! Spammers will be shot, survivors will be shot again! Hello: I don't think that the above is correct about this metapackage but I might be wrong. Nevertheless you can add KDE3 opensuse build repo to your repos and install KDE3 from there: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE3/openSUSE_11.2/ and maybe http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Community/openSUSE_11.2 I have replaced kdm4 for kdm3 and had no problems with it so far. The issue with build repos is when they update packages they also remove older packages and you can not revert to the older ones in case of problems. Therefore I suggest you to maintain your own mirror of the repo that keeps old packages. Not convenient solution but I don't know better. When you log in at first time don't forget to select KDE3 from Menu/Session Type in the login screen. What I don't know how to make KDE3 session default. There are options in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager (DISPLAYMANAGER) and in /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager (DEFAULT_WM) but I don't know what to write and to which one. WHY? So now your telling Linux users they "can't" or "shouldn't" use something that's found on the openSUSE website... and/or relay this information to other users? If this is the case... THEN WHY IS IT ON THE WEBSITE - if it's off limits then REMOVE IT!!! Sheesh, Curtis P.S. Open source users historically don't respond well to edicts and mandates without cause. -- BEWARE! It is not off limits, it has just certain associated risks that its users should be aware of.
Sheesh, Curtis

You did not want to get it, right? Adding repos and installing packages from them can be harmful to your system. Thus each repo should have a context which informs the user before he adds it. If you do not inform the user but just supply the link, you failed him in case something goes wrong. If you supply the link to the wiki page instead, you did try to help him make an informed choice.
