Re: [SLE] [news]Windows XP: Too much for some PCs?
Ok Fred you got me. Last time you used [M$] and I put it in my filter. Now you use [XP]. A filter only works if there is consistency and I don't have to build a whole dictionary of msft vocabulary. =) Can you and anybody else who feels like posting a link to an article simply tag specific news messages with [news]? Thanks, mk

There must be 100 mails a day of people asking stupid questions that can be answered by RTFM, I have no problem sifting through these and deleting them. I must expend about two calories and 20 seconds of time hitting the delete button. Why do people complain about a few postings OT? They are much more interesting than stupid questions. -----Original Message----- From: Jonathan Wilson [mailto:wilson@claborn.net] Sent: Thursday, June 14, 2001 3:33 PM To: suse-linux-e@suse.com Subject: Re: [SLE] [news]Windows XP: Too much for some PCs? Ok, I agree.. but I'm a newbie and i know I ask stupid questions but I don't always know where to find the answers and here I find some guidelines, at least. To have used windows for several years before was a handicap when entering the linux world. Now I feel addicted to linux but it took me some time to get some marks in this "weird" world. This list was the best help I could find as masters replied to my STUPID questions. But I agree with you: for stupid questions I know the answers, I try to reply as others did for me if I can else, I ignore the message. The few news messages are interesting as I have not the time to check the source websites and should be just ignored by people not interested in this. I have still much much much to learn about linux (I think I can do 0,00000000001% of what is possible) but I really thank this list (I mean its members ;-)) for helping me in this fascinating task. Ciao! Ju.

Make that 10 to 3 . . . I come to suse-linux-e for SuSE related info. Like many others, I read slashdot, linuxtoday, etc., so a great many of these postings are redundant for me. I can, however, appreciate those who might find this info valuable on this list. My only request would be to continue to add [OT] or [news] to the header for those of us that want to filter these messages out. Thanks.
Has anyone on this list used mp3blaster? I am using SuSE 7.1 and have installed mp3blaster from the SuSE installation CD. The program starts but when I play any song, it only makes funny noises that sound as though the song is being played VERY slowly. I don't find anything in the program help or man pages that give me a clue what is the problem. Any help is appreciated. Damon Register

First you should try and see if sound is better with program like 'mpg123' and 'xmms'. -- Mads Martin Joergensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogic, with just a little bit more effort." -- A. P. J.

First you should try and see if sound is better with program like 'mpg123' and 'xmms'. xmms and mpg123 both work here. One problem with this is that xmms requires X and I am trying to find a non-graphical program. So mpg123 is non-graphical but seems to not provide any user interface as does mp3blaster. I have got a general idea on packages like Mpg123 and mp3blaster. Has anyone found or already started sort of "feature tables" in which the features of let's say the two above named programmes are listed in comparison (just like in the magazines, but for disk storage use). i imagine this could be very useful for linux-newbies -- *º¤., ¸¸,.¤º*¨¨¨*¤ =Oliver@home= *º¤., ¸¸,.¤º*¨¨*¤ Also, wie war das denn nochmal? Da wir jetzt durch eine untaktisch kluge Fuegung eingesehen haben, dass das mit der Zusammendehnung ein echter Griff ins Klo war, sehen wir keinen weiteren Grund zur Veranlassung.

ME TOO!! ;-) Fred always selects only the *best* FUD. Not only do the articles illustrate the many very real problems of M$, but what I d\find extremely interesting is the recent inteligent contributions from others regarding the original post. (ala Curtis Rey ... Steve Hatfield and the like) For me, many of these [OT] messages/replies enlighten my own thought process. And that I find enjoyable. I'd say to those who dont enjoy it, dont read it, delete enmasse, filter or unsubscribe. This has been going on LONG before any of the recent whining of requesting [M$], [OT], bla, bla. And will continue long after you leave. Thanks to all for the many thought provoking posts, which provide an oasis for me in a sometimes boring list. rob

With all respect Stefan, I know you've been on this list a LONG time, and I could see how receiving mails re M$ would be annoying to someone who *only* used Linux. But.... I suggest the bigger picture is many people (like myself) use *both* M$ and Linux and the benifit of being informed outweighs the few messages that occur. I feel The M$ posts in a purist thought are unwelcomed,(they certiannly would be a few years ago) but I strongly feel this gives those interested in Linux some ammunition of why to go further with LInux and they also expose many warts of M$. We cant ignore the largest, most popular OS in the world and still say we as a community are informed. I hope you remain tolerant/ open minded on the matter ;-) sincerely rob
First of all if someone doesn't know the answer to a question or hasn't been
able to find it then its not a stupid question. Remember even if you do
know an answer to your question should be on the suse site doesn't mean you
will find it, some times people have to be pointed in a different direction
or they over look something. We have all asked "stupid" questions. Second
of all if you don't like what someone else has to say then delete it or
filter it. Third, operating systems don't exist in a vacuum. Linux is
affected by windows and MS and they are affected by Linux. Posting news
about Linux and MS has helped a lot of people on this stay excited about
Linux and as a result become much more supportive and responsive to helping
others on this list with their Linux questions and problems.

I agree as a mostly lurker who is gradually picking things up :-) I've rarely got round to asking a question as I don't want to just say "Why did my ess maestro sound drivers go funny when I upgraded the kernel to 2.4.4/5 and the kde start sound now lasts minutes and sounds unrecognisable" because I don't think that's a good question, but it is a real problem. I'll ask it when I can be specific enough in my details :-) I would add that (for me anyway) I don't mind being told to RTFM but I would appreciate: 1) being told which FM to read (and where I can find it). 2) a brief explanation as well because not all the FM are that readable to someone new to the subject, even if not new to linux! Read that as a gentle dig at the qualitly/level of some of the docs while still being grateful that people have taken the time to write those docs for software that (other?) people have written! I'd like to add my thanks to list members for all the help and information available here - it's much like a spam free, (mostly) flame free usenet group - which is meant as a Good Thing. Thanks people. regards, Bill
