I am in no way discouraging compiling the source. In fact, I distribute the source RPM at my page along with the i686 binary. The problem is that if you un-install the RPM (rpm -e MPlayer --nodeps). and compile and install from source, YaST2 will complain that you have an un-fulfilled dependency. It will automatically be installed next time you use YaST2 to install anything. Also, not everyone wants to have hundreds of megabytes of devel packages (MPlayer needs gcc, glibc-devel, libpng-devel, libjpeg-devel, libungif, libdvdread-devel, glu-devel, etc.) just to compile a single software package Rebuilding the RPM (rpm --rebuild MPlayer-0.90pre10-2.src.rpm) will avoid these problems while still getting the advantages of source compilation. NOTE: You could also just something like CheckInstall. Just make sure you get the naming scheme right (MPlayer != mplayer). On Thursday 14 November 2002 07:27, you wrote:

Seriously, though. The MPlayer that comes with SuSE 8.1 is crap since it is not optimized for anything recent (remember, SuSE optimizes for i586) and doesn't support much.
Don't bother with anything. Just download tarball. Compile. Install. It works nice.

I have a hard time believing that anything else would depend on MPlayer. If something really has listed a dependency on it, I would say that the package maintainer has made a mistake. (Unless you are talking about the plugin that makes mozilla embed movies with MPlayer.) Regards Ole
I was surprised as well. But... # rpm --whatrequires -q MPlayer kdebase3-SuSE-8.1-56 # This package seems to contain SuSE wallpapers, krpmview, and some other stuff. It also requires: kdebase3 kdebase3-nsplugin susewm susetour release-notes ghostscript-fonts-std k3b icons keramik yast2-theme-SuSELinux susewm-kcmyast dosbootdisk MPlayer fillup fileutils On Thursday 14 November 2002 16:42, Ole Kofoed Hansen wrote:

With other words, it's an rpm that takes care that SuSE functionality is installed. You probably can kdebase3-SuSE without breaking anything ;)
