I am looking to get a PDA this weekend. I am looking in the $199 range in my small home town. I wondered how the Handspring and Palm work on linux? Which is recomended? I'm on a limited budget and although I would love to have a linux based PDA none are in my price range. The local Staples has the Zaurus, but wants $699 for it...lol. Thanks
Almost any Palm OS PDA is supported under Linux. Some add-on apps
have Windows desktop software, which won't work. Backing up and
syncing the basic apps works fine. It is easier to enter your address
book on the desktop. The Palms have a little classier finish and
upgradeable OS. THe Visor have an expansion slot. Palms come with a
serial cradle, Visors with a USB cradle. Which do you have available?

Both the serial and USB palms and handsprings work fine with Linux. I have used both a Palm V and Handspring Visor with success. Best Regards, Keith -- LPIC-2, MSCE, N+ I can C for miles and miles Got spam? Get SPASTIC http://spastic.sourceforge.net

I've been using a Handspring Visor for quite a long time now with my workstation. Works fine with Jpilot and SuSE 7.3. That's the USB version.
I'm on a limited budget and
Lot cheaper than a Zaurus. It's got plug in memory expansion. You can buy the color version if you want to. I find that Quck Office and WordSmith are good for editing. Combined with Abiword in SuSE Linux it's really good. Thanks -- Richard www.sheflug.co.uk
I have successfully used both Handspring and Sony Clie in Linux. However, I advise against Handspring, as myself and two other people I know have had serious hardware issues with Handspring. Two of use went through 3 handsprings before the one year warranty was up, and the 3rd person went trough 4. And after the warranty is up they want $80 to fix/replace it. : -----Original Message----- : From: Jon Doe [mailto:linuxgeek@woh.rr.com] : Sent: Wednesday, April 10, 2002 5:16 PM : To: SuSE : Subject: [SLE] PDA's on linux question : : : I am looking to get a PDA this weekend. What model Handspring do you have? I have the cheapest model and it has served me well for a couple of years with no need for repairs. My only problem with it is that it is too thick. But thin costs. dj tuchler

How about posting details about the CLIE under Linux ? (I take it you mean installing Linux ON the CLIE ? Or am I dreaming ??)
The Compaq IPaQ comes installed with Windows CE, but Linux can be installed on it: http://www.handhelds.org Linux has been running on the IPaQ since long before it was produced. Jim Gettys and his team at Compaq provide the familiar distribution. On 10 Apr 2002 at 18:15, Jon Doe wrote:

I expect that if the orignal poster can't afford a Zaurus PDA, he won't be able to afford an IPaq either, though he may be able to find a used one in good condition. Yes, I also took into consideration that his quoted price of the Zaurus was way above retail. :o) -- Ron Sinclair @ http://www.wigglit.com
Hi Freddy... there is any place where I can take a look at the Software list that came with that Linux Distribution for Compaq IPAQ ? Because there (on http://www.handhelds.org ) there are lots of information about setting up Linux on the IPAQ but doesn't said anything about the applications that came with it, or from where Could we get more applications that run's on the IPAQ? Also I hear the rumor that if something goes wrong on the wipe of the Prom the IPAQ Could be unusable ? also.. there is any Dual boot for the Windows CE & Linux ? THANKs a LOT !! bye --ed

The IPaQ should run most applications. You might check the familiar distro. They've og X working. The objective was to be able to run just about any Linux app as long as there was anough memory. One of the benefits of this project was that X was made more efficient. If you turn an IPaQ into a "brick", there is an offer to fix it in the familiar distro page. There are instaructions on the page on how to save your copy of Windows CE before installing the new boot loader. There are also several listservs, similar to this one. All I can tell you is that these guys are very passionate about the IPaQ, and Jim Gettys himself is one of the original people involved with X itself. WRT: Price. You can get thr 32 bit IPaQs reasonably cheap. The lowest on the factory outlet (refurbished) is about $279. http://www.compaqfactoryoutlet.com/ You can get a Visor or Palm for under $100 though.
