[opensuse] Is SUSE using KDE 4 already?
I was reading an article on KDE4. I saw a screenshot, which piqued my interest, since it appeared Geeko was in the menu... http://photos1.blogger.com/x/blogger/938/4204/1600/471459/menu.png I'm just curious if you SUSE folk already have KDE 4 available for use internally? Here's the article. http://linuxhelp.blogspot.com/2007/01/sneek-preview-of-expected-features-in.... -- kai - theperfectreign@yahoo.com www.perfectreign.com || www.4thedadz.com www.filesite.org || www.donutmonster.com wo ist der ort für den ehrlichsten kuss ich weiss, dass ich ihn für uns finden muss... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Of course NOT ! KDE 4 is not ready, so SUSE made an enchancement to KDE 3. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yeah, but the screenshot suggests that internal suse people might be running kde4 development versions. Joe -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Sure they do :-), and so can you with the KDE:KDE4 build service packages. But as you noted they are development versions, don't risk your user account. Bye, Steve -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

can that stuff in there be installed on a working 10.2 without "endangering" the existing kde 3.5.5? bye, MH -- gpg key fingerprint: 5F64 4C92 9B77 DE37 D184 C5F9 B013 44E7 27BD 763C -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The stuff from the build service installs to /opt/kde4. So it doesn't overwrite any program files of your kde3 installation. But there is also the the ~/.kde configuration directory, which is used by both versions. To avoid problems there, you should use another useraccount for testing KDE4. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Didn't someone write a instruction page for this thing for cohabiting KDE 3.x with 3.(x+1)? It would be nice to try the newer versions of Gnome this way if possible. -- ___ _ _ _ ____ _ _ _ | | | | [__ | | | |___ |_|_| ___] | \/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Instructions: 1. Add http://software.opensuse.org/download/KDE:/KDE4/openSUSE_10.2/ to yast installation source and install everything from there except for -debug packages. 2. Log out and select KDE4 session from gdm/kdm, log in as test user. 3. On first impression, everything looks the same as in KDE 3.5, you would get to see all the devs in the splash though. 4. Control Center was broken, so couldnt change any settings. I am not sure there are any new themes/apps taking advantage of QT4/plasma magic yet. 5. Open ksysguard and some games and post screenshots of those as they are the only place there is any visible improvements. http://dev.beryl-project.org/~cyberorg/suse/10/kde4/ Cheers -J -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Any reason that you compare it with the GNOME Mahjongg? :-) Bye, Steve -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I haven't seen it. But that screenshot isn't from KDE4, it's from the suse menu in 10.2. I guess they expect to include it in KDE4 when it gets released -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

No, it's a screenshot from an early version from some openSUSE 10.2 Beta. Bye, Steve -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
